Who is Sen. Katie Britt, who will deliver the Republican State of the Union response?
NPR ^ | MARCH 7, 2024 | Eric McDaniel

Posted on 03/07/2024 11:13:14 AM PST by jacknhoo

Katie Britt, a first-term Republican senator from Alabama, has been selected by party leadership to deliver the GOP response to President Biden's State of the Union address Thursday.

"Americans are struggling amid a border catastrophe, crushing inflation, an increasingly dangerous world, and fears about a President not up to the task. Against this backdrop, Senator Katie Britt will share her incredible story as the first woman elected to the United States Senate from the state of Alabama," said Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., in a statement. "As the only current Republican mom of school-aged kids serving in the Senate, Katie is fighting to preserve the American Dream for the next generation."

"The American people will tune in as the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate turns the page on the oldest President in history," Johnson said.

Who is Katie Britt? Britt was born and raised in Enterprise, Ala., where her parents owned a hardware store and dance studio. She and her husband, Wesley, a former NFL player, live in Montgomery with their two children, Bennett and Ridgeway.

She attended the University of Alabama for her undergraduate and law degrees and was a long-time staff member for her predecessor, Sen. Richard Shelby, before his retirement in 2022.

What will Katie Britt say in her response to Biden's State of the Union address? Britt, like many of her fellow Republicans, is an outspoken critic of the Biden administration's response to record levels of migrant arrivals at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Announcing her opposition to a failed bipartisan immigration reform proposal last month, Britt said that the president "has made it clear that he doesn't want to end the border crisis – he wants to enable it."

She also presents a striking visual contrast to both President Biden and many of her Senate colleagues. Britt, 42, is one of nine women in the Senate Republican conference and one of just five senators under the age of 45.

"The Republican Party is the party of hardworking parents and families, and I'm looking forward to putting this critical perspective front and center," Britt said in a statement. "There is no doubt that President Biden's failed presidency has made America weaker and more vulnerable at every turn. At this decisive moment in our country's history, it's time for the next generation to step up and preserve the American Dream for our children and our grandchildren."

In a presidential election year, it is also likely that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will loom large in her remarks.

Britt endorsed Trump in a December op-ed, writing that "despite the dark clouds that haunt our country's horizon, I believe with every fiber of my being that our nation's best days are yet to come," touting what she sees as Trump's leadership on the border and embrace of "peace through strength."

At least be realistic.

“Maybe she’s not as polished and well-spoken as you, but Alabama’s voters elected her - or are they all delusional?”

Most people only voted for her because her husband played football @ Alabama once.

Others were duped by her fists on hips and pouty lips schtick.

These “responses” are almost always terribly produced. The only one that was well delivered (arguably) and was even talked about afterward was Tim Scott and he made people lose their minds on the Left saying - including rich white liberals like Joy Behar saying he doesn’t understand what it means to be black in America.

The one Sarah Sanders gave was pretty blah, IIRC.

I’ll repeat my #11 post...and I’ll type slowly just for you...

Gov Kristi Noem is the most likely...

You sound as looney as your RHINO screenname implies.

Got it.

I would still trade both of my Senators (Chris Murphy and "stolen valor" Blumenthal) for her.

Utterly deranged. What has Katie Britt ever done that makes you think she could step in to the job of president? Hell, she makes even Kristi Noem look like an elder statesman.

While Britt is not my choice for VP, I would take her over just about every "elder stateman" (puke!) in swampy DC.

This VP speculation thing is getting out of hand.

I held my nose and voted for her b/c I knew she worked with Shelby. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised and pleased at her voting record, comments, etc. I’ve also been very pleased with Senator Tuberville.

Maybe in a very very small circle but overall, I bet 99.99% of registered Republicans have never heard of her. Probably just as well since these rebuttals are lame, poory presented, and just going through the motions. Name one rebuttal ever that was remembered even seconds after it was delivered?

She is an establishment crony with a pretty face and no real achievements. Strong on right to chose, otherwise, she easily could be another Haley.

Yes, somewhat they are. But with the machinations of the GOPe she was their only choice. But it’s hard to imagine a less qualified Senator, much less ready to be President. She was a cute girl social climber.

Gets out of school and joins Senator Shelby’s staff as press secretary. From there she gets passed over to the staff of the University of Alabama President to be on his staff as a “special assistant”.

After law school, she goes to a law firm and helps start what? A “Government Affairs Branch” of the firm! LOL

Then she takes a leave of absence to leave the firm with the Government Affairs branch and goes back to work for Shelby as communication director!
Then she becomes his Chief of Staff.

Then she gets “selected” as president and CEO of the Business Council of Alabama.

Then when Shelby retires, she gets HIS job by sucking up to McConnell who gives her 2 million bucks.
Won’t say 2020 was stolen.

We are stuck with this student council girls-state type twit for several decades no doubt, in one of formerly most respected positions in government. But for God’s sake don’t imagine this squish as a vice president or President.

Is that you Mitch McConnell. She’s a perpetual social climber, connection maker and coffee getter who wound up in an actual job now. And she is mostly capable of doing what she’s told.

She’s a classic example of what is wrong with the GOP.

Noem bring very little to the table and is unfit to be President on day one. If you think she’s hot, that’s fine, but the last thing America needs right now is President Noem.

Well, second to the last. President Britt would be even worse.

Britt:

Wasn't it Mo Brooks who said that we should move on from the 2020 election?

The only person who should be selected for v.p. is someone who can walk into the Oval Office and take over immediately should 78-year-old Donald Trump have a stroke or heart attack. Period.

That isn’t Kristi Noem or this twit. If Trump selects either of them, I will think he’s lost his marbles.

Trump’s VP choice should be Jennifer Ruth-Green from Indiana. No one knows her. She lost a congressional election in 22. Check her out.

Me too Salmon. I’d like to see Tuberville as Senate Majority leader or VP.
