In a little more than five years – sometime in early 2029 – the world will likely be unable to stay below the internationally agreed temperature limit for global warming if it continues to burn fossil fuels at its current rate, a new study says.
The study moves three years closer the date when the world will eventually hit a critical climate threshold, which is an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since the 1800s.
“It’s not that the fight against climate change will be lost after six years, but I think probably if we’re not already on a strong downward trajectory, it’ll be too late to fight for that 1.5 degree limit,” said study lead author Robin Lamboll, an Imperial College of London climate scientist.
The study in Monday’s journal Nature Climate Change calculates what’s referred to as the remaining “carbon budget,” which is how much fossil fuels the world can burn and still have a 50% chance of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. That is the threshold set by the 2015 Paris agreement.
Even though the carbon budget looks to run out early in the year 2029, that doesn’t mean the world will instantly hit 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times. The actual temperature change could happen a bit earlier or as much as a decade or two later, but it will happen once the budget runs out, Lamboll said.

It’s cute that they base their statistics since the late 1800’s to project where climate is going to go. That’s like using todays weather forecast to predict weather for the next century.

Oh, heck. I picked the spring of 2029 for my military coup to take over all the states admitted to the Union while James Buchanan was president (Minnesota, Oregon, and Kansas).
This climate thing is bound to cause huge disruptions in 2029. I guess I’m going to have to rethink my timeline.
All that scaremongering isn’t working. They went from global warming to climate change to climate disaster to climate catastrophe and people aren’t buying. So now time to up the ante another notch.
Btw whenever you see the phrase “scientists calculate” as in this article, it means it’s BS. If any prediction is based on caclulation, especially of far off events, it’s complete and total BS. Funny how they can’t even ‘calculate’ correctly temperature a week from today but they can predict doom with certainty.

“Climate doom”! It’s always just a few years out! Yet none of these “forecasters” can correctly predict what the weather will be this coming weekend. Often, they even get their prediction of tomorrow’s weather wrong. Let’s upend our entire society and economy on their predictions that have yet to come true even once.
New York was supposed to be under ice and Miami was supposed to be under water by now. Based on their predictions, I’m supposed to have beach-front property at this time but I’m still over 100 miles from the nearest ocean beach.
