>>But some owners who have taken out Tesla policies complain that while they were initially offered well-priced premiums, data collected by the car on how they drive was soon used against them.

I don’t have a problem with that - drive too fast, drive more miles than others, pass cars dangerously, live in a city that has high crime and/or lots of insurance fraud - you should pay more than me.

Feel the same about health insurance - want to be a lazy slob that overeats, and smoke three packss of cigarettes a day - go for it - but you should pay the extra cost for your extra care.

People who make responsible decisions should benefit, those that don’t should feel the effect of those poor decisions.

Rates come down once the owner scores a really big fire extinguisher, no?

Daddy always told me “when you’re thinking about purchasing a vehicle call your insurance company first and get a quote.”

He also told me “if you really want something and you think you really need it, wait two weeks.”

Tesla insurance policy holders can be penalized for accelerating too fast, passing too close to other vehicles, and even driving after 10pm.

What a hoot!

penalized for accelerating too fast, isn't that one of the prime selling points?

passing too close to other vehicles, what does that even mean?

even driving after 10pm, OMG!

"so why DO insurers penalize eco-drivers?"

Ummmmm ... the same reason that auto insurers penalize high performance car drivers? Because they cost the insurance companies more money in claims?

The same reason that life insurance companies penalize smokers and the obese?

Unlike in the past when a windshield could be replaced with relative ease, the sensors that go into them now mean traditionally simple repairs have become longwinded and expensive.

Many cars are like this now. My newest car is a 2018 Subaru and getting the windshield replaced was a big ordeal thanks to the collision avoidance/lane change cameras. Between taxes and other expenses, I'm done buying new cars and just going to keep getting my existing ones fixed up.

Insurers don’t penalize EV drivers.

But watch out for some insane politician to call for lower premiums for EVs (which would be paid for by higher premiums on gas cars.)

Simple facts: Electric vehicles are a hoax designed to limit our ability to travel and control our lives.

Ford is being bribed by Joey to build electric cars and they are not selling because even the phonies on the left see that this is a virtue signal that is too expensive.

The UAW is actually fighting for America’s future with this strike which they will win. The workers know what is going on and they know it will come to an end when the Biden Crime Family collapses.
Elon Musk is NOT a good guy. He is part of the plot.

If the battery is damaged in an accident, then it is likely to be a total write off.

Normal cars don’t spontaneously combust and burn down the house where they are garaged. For one. Normal cars being lighter weight don’t do as much damage in a minor collision as do the heavy-batteried EVs. Two. any more?

[[Since electric cars have fewer components, when one does fail its more expensive to replace]]

That makes no sense at all- fewer does not automatically translate to “more expensive”!

"why DO insurers penalize eco-drivers?"

Because they self-immolate just sitting in your garage?

Susceptibility to catching fire and taking all nearby objects (like the garage) with it, while the fire department stands by to protect nearby structures, unable to put the fire out.

That’s why insurance is higher on them. Risk assessment dictates rates.

I will not respond well when I find one day that the rates for my ICE vehicle skyrocket as the insurance companies spread the risk among all of their insureds.

It’s coming.
