A state commission today approved plans to phase out fossil fuel-burning furnaces beginning as soon as 2025 as part of New York’s aggressive program to address climate change.
The plan adopted today by the state Climate Action Council requires energy-efficient electric heat pumps or other non-combustion heating systems in every new home built in 2025 or thereafter.
For existing homes, residents whose fossil fuel-burning heating units give out after 2030 will have to replace them with a zero-emission system.
Those are just two of the many policies in a 445-page plan adopted today by the state Climate Action Council, a 22-member commission made up of state agency leaders, environmental experts, energy industry leaders and others.
Some of the policies approved today in the Climate Action Council’s “final scoping plan’' require further action before they can be enforced. The new regulations on heating systems, for example, will require changes to the state building code. Other changes may require new legislation.
But the council’s “final scoping plan” is now the official policy for how state government will meet goals for greenhouse gas reduction required under a state law passed in 2019. State regulations must follow its prescriptions, said Robert Howarth, a Cornell University professor and a member of the Climate Action Council.
“Agencies are supposed to go ahead and start following the plan -- making regulations, doing whatever it is that needs to be done -- as of next month,’’ said Howarth, a professor of ecology and environmental biology.

That’s the theory. This plan depends on ‘zero-emission dispatchable technology,” which hasn’t been invented yet. It has been compared to jumping out of an airplane, hoping a parachute will be invented before you hit the ground.
They are aiming at mandatory electric heat pumps for residential heating. Get ready for 50 degree room temperatures from October to May. Should do wonders for the thermal underwear industry.

I personally want research to continue. It would be fantastic if the day came where I could charge a power bank through wind power and then, when the bank is fully charged, to be able to use that power and not be charged for using the grid.
Or to be be able to switch to renewables when they are useful and then switch back when they aren’t useful with a flick of the switch.
That would be world-changing, imo.
I have very advanced heat pump (ground loop) system for my house.
Summer is great. Very low bills. Winter, it sucks ass, as it’s essentially an electric heat system at that point.
There’s only so much heat that can be pulled out of the ground loop.

Sucks to be you in Northern NY. Those heat pumps don’t work that great in real cold.

Not bad ... extracting heat from water is pretty efficient. Since ground water is 50-55 it’s much much better at the cooling side, though.
Problem is like everyone else on the thread said, a) we have ample natural gas and highly efficient furnaces; and b) none on the left has any interest or plan to expand electric capacity to handle all the electric cars and other equipment they want to mandate.
From this all reasonable people infer correctly that the intent is to beat people up until the only choice is an inadequate electric grid, and then use that single point of failure as a weapon of control with insane prices and shutoffs if your social credit score doesn’t conform, PRC style.

Not very good. I had a home with a heat pump. It feels like a constant cold drafty air being pushed over you when it’s very cold. I have a natural gas furnace now. Still forced air, but at least it is warm. My favorite was when I was a kid. We had a coal furnace with radiators.
Why would you want to use the most efficient and plentiful fuel in history?
If they’re smart, like Florida, they will put in the heat pump and air conditioner and put the lines underground. All of our electrical wires are underground for the entire house. we never lose power. In fact, during the hurricanes, we don’t lose electricity, cable or Internet, it’s actually a great way to go, but everybody complains about every damn thing in the universe.
In other news, New York State to phase out its residents.

LOL. I think this is truer than many may realize.
I built a series of 13 buildings for an electric utility. We were asked to use all sorts of innovative electric systems for HVAC..
We did earth coupled ground loops, under water loops in small lakes, ice storage, vertical wells and all sorts of variations. The vertical wells worked best but they were more costly than the ground loops and the building was insulated beyond most peoples dreams with some solar components that helped in the winter.
They are going to need a lot of electric power. Maybe they can re-commission the Shoreham nuclear plant.
They’re going to teach New Yawkers how to stay warm by rubbing two nickels together.

I would heat my house by moving to Florida.
