General George Washington embraced each of his military officers before stepping down from his commission Angelica
George Washington gave a final goodbye to his soldiers at the close of the Revolutionary War on this day in history, Dec. 4, 1783.
Washington, then-commanding general of the Continental Army, rallied his military officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City, according to History.com.
He then informed his troops that he would be stepping down from his commission to return to civilian life.
The future first president of the United States led his army through six years of warfare against the British ahead of the triumphant Battle of Yorktown in 1781, where British General Lord Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered.
This victory became known as the end of the Revolutionary War.

The last battle of the war was actually fought at Cuddalore, in India, in 1783, between the British against the French and a force from their ally, the Indian state of Mysore. But news of the peace treaty arrived in the middle of the battle, so the fighting came to a halt and the battle was inconclusive.
Worked as a field tech in the Wall St. area for almost 20 years and passed it many times. But it was a winter day in 1975 when some Puerto Ricans set off a bomb there that sticks in my memory.

When told by the American artist Benjamin West that Washington was going to resign, King George III of England said “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”]
And thus, he became the greatest man in the world, at that time.
The bombing of Fraunces Tavern by Puerto Rican terrorists and Clinton’s pardon of them in the last days of his Presidency should never be forgotten, or forgiven.

Coming up through school when we actually learned American history I still felt cheated after reading many books later in life on the rev war and the people who made this country happen including George Washington. Amazing people and events that very few people today can replicate, honor, love of God, dedication, morals, responsibility, respect dignity and patriotism.
I taught my jr high history students about how significant this act by Washington was. He was the most powerful man in North America, and he walked away from it to go back home to his ‘farm’.
Think about it. His ineptitude/ignorance as a young man in the wilderness of what is now Pennsylvania starts the French & Indian War. Latter actions in that war help save a British army from annihilation. His appointment to head the Continental army brings Virginia to the aid of Boston and New England. Often defeated in battle, he nevertheless kept the Continental Army intact.
Inflicted defeats of the British at Trenton and Princeton but neither were crippling blows. When with the aid of the French navy he got Cornwallis cornered on a peninsula at Yorktown he struck the final blow to win the war.
He then presided over the Constitutional Convention which pretty much created the office of President with him in mind. Served two terms and once again retired to Mount Vernon. (To think that Brandon is the current holder of that office...)
I think he is overlooked in the average person’s mind is he has become almost a cartoon figure. He died before the invention of photography; the only images we have of him are paintings and drawing.
I can’t think of an American MAN who has risen to Washington’s level of commitment to America in terms of fidelity, sacrifice, tenacity and bravery in the face of over-whelming adversity than, perhaps, Donald Trump.
But, his story isn’t over yet.
