Newsweek ^ | Oct 10 2022 | BY JESS THOMSON

In the wake of President Biden's mention of nuclear "armageddon", and Elon Musk tweeting that "nuclear war probability is rising rapidly," it is natural that people have pondered online what they would do, and where they would shelter, in the event of a nuclear war.

But we were recently told that catching was good as long as you werent really doing it for pleasure and rather just for the purpose of expanding your bomb bay.

Back in the 70’s when I was stuck working on missile sites at Minot AFB in North Dakota, the way they would get us to stop bitching about the cold was to tell us that we were in the safest place in the US in the event of a nuclear war

Do I have to do all the planning around here? :)

Pretty much...

I know the band but not the song.

I'd really like
To change the world
And save it from the mess it's in

I'm too weak
And I'm too thin
Would like to fly but I can't even swim!

Seems we three have been running around the music circles a time or two today!

“I’m downwind of Nashville and you just know those commie Ruskies are going to try and kill country music.”

I was raised in West Nashville. Dad built a fallout shelter. It was five miles from ground zero.

And we will all go together when we go
What a comforting fact that is to know
Universal bereavement
An inspiring achievement
Yes we all will go together when we go

I live near the Hanford Area. Back in the day we always figured to be one of the first places hit. But now that they no longer produce or store any plutonium, we just need to deal with the fallout from JB Lewis-McChord and Bremerton Naval Shipyard

Duck and cover! And we got cartoons of some damned turtle in a civilian defense helmet. Oh, and my granny wouldn’t let me play in the snow for fear of strontium 90 from nuclear tests.

“Anyway, maybe figure out how to get into that mountain in Colorado which houses NORAD.”

The old command center for NORAD was located at Cheyenne Mountain. But now the Cheyenne Mountain Colorado Springs complex serves as the Alternate Command Center for NORAD and as a training site for crew qualification. As a result of ongoing operational and security requirements, Cheyenne Mountain NORAD is not open to the general public for tours.

The thinking for command and control has been spread out into locational areas of which there are basically three and backups.

The Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR) conducts aerospace control within its area of operations and contributes to NORAD’s aerospace warning mission. With its headquarters located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, ANR provides an ongoing capability to detect, validate, and warn of any aircraft and/or cruise missile threat in its area of operations that could threaten North American security.

The Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) is headquartered with the 1 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANR executes a variety of tasks to defend Canadian airspace, including identifying and tracking all aircraft entering Canadian airspace, exercising operational command and control of all air defense forces in CANR and operations in support of other government departments and agencies. The 1 Canadian Air Division is responsible for providing CANR with combat-ready air forces to meet Canada’s commitment to the defense of North America and maintain the sovereignty of North American airspace.

The Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR) provides airspace surveillance and control and directs air sovereignty activities for the continental United States (CONUS). Co-located with Headquarters First Air Force at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, a Combined Air Operations Center coordinates CONR sector activities and executes the NORAD air sovereignty mission for the continental United States. CONR plans, conducts, controls, and coordinates all Air Force forces for the Commander of NORAD. CONR is presently divided into two defense sectors: the Western Air Defense Sector, with its headquarters located at McChord Air Force Base, Washington (now JBLM); and the Eastern Air Defense Sector, with its headquarters located at Rome, New York.

This is all backed with direct lines to aircraft which in this case won’t help much as sub launch puts the projectiles on us in 20 minutes. But it also adds other satellites since they closed pave paws in the mid 1990’s.
