Zombie ice from the massive Greenland ice sheet will eventually raise global sea level by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, according to a study released Monday.
Zombie or doomed ice is ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by those larger glaciers. That’s because the parent glaciers are getting less replenishing snow. Meanwhile the doomed ice is melting from climate change, said study co-author William Colgan, a glaciologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.
“It’s dead ice. It’s just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet,” Colgan said in an interview. “This ice has been consigned to the ocean, regardless of what climate (emissions) scenario we take now.”
Study lead author Jason Box, a glaciologist at the Greenland survey, said it is “more like one foot in the grave.”
The unavoidable ten inches in the study is more than twice as much sea level rise as scientists had previously expected from the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet. The study in the journal Nature Climate Change said it could reach as much as 30 inches (78 centimeters). By contrast, last year’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report projected a range of 2 to 5 inches (6 to 13 centimeters) for likely sea level rise from Greenland ice melt by the year 2100. The researchers in the study said they couldn’t estimate the timing of the committed melting, yet in the last sentence they mention, “within this century,” without supporting it, Stearns said.
Colgan responded that the team doesn’t know how long it will take for all the doomed ice to melt, but making an educated guess, it would probably be by the end of this century or at least by 2150.

I’ve been trying to figure out some things. Like the ratio of the volume of ice to the volume of that ice when it melts. Like the same thing but for snow, packed show, glaciers, etc. Then I want to calculate the effect on the total volume of water on Earth.
I don’t know how to do the calculations. But I’ll bet you my favorite prayer rug that the stuff this article is talking about will definitely NOT lead to a 10-inch rise in sea level.
Mathematicians? geologists?
I heard zombie ice was spotted with bomb cyclone.
If the ice in Greenland was floating in the water, that would be the perfect analogy.
look at the third one...
Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.
Joseph Goebbels
Yup. By Murder Hornets flying in the Acid Rain. We’re doomed.
LOL! Good one! The rats are too stupid to understand this.
Should put a chill onto the Sharknado weather problems.
Gotta get a flame thrower!

Bottom line is he got paid for his bs research that is chock full of hedges. By which government I don’t know...... turns out Denmark is paying.
So nothing to worry about this week anyway.
Doomed ice... zombie ice..... and if sea levels rise 10 inches... will anyone even notice? And just how do they measure this rise in the seas?

That’s actually a good question.
Water actually expands when it freezes. That’s why aluminum cans can burst when they freeze.
What’s the exact volume difference? I did a quick internet search and I found a lot of pages that discussed it but couldn’t find one that put an exact ratio on it.
What is more, not all glacier ice is solid. I think this is particularly true on the upper levels that have not been compacted under it’s own weight.
Eventually!!! Oh NOes! Is that like this afternoon eventually or year 2187 eventually. 😵💫🤡💩
It's times like these that I really miss Rush.
Even if the seas do rise slowly, it shouldn’t be a problem. 30 inches in 100-150 years? A modern civilization should be able to cope with that pretty easily. Just move slightly away from the coastline as the water gets too close in.
They make it sound like entire continents will be underwater, like during Noah’s flood.
Zombie Ice? Is that worse than regular ice? If Zombie Ice from Greenland is bad, what about Zombie Ice from Alaska? Would that be good ice?
Okay, can anyone tell me how much ice was on GREENLAND, when Leif Erickson lived there?
He called it GREENland because it was so GREEN and free of ice back around 1000 AD.
at least
likely
couldn’t estimate
within the century
doesn’t know
educated guess
probably
as much as
could be even worse
