There have been naturally occurring rises in medical costs. And there have been outsized increases because of outside influence. Govt is a part but so is health insurance. Today the only medical professions governed by the market are cosmetic surgery, Lasix surgery and veterinary medicine, though that is changing. When people are not paying out of pocket the provider can raise his prices to the level insurance and govt will pay.
The last days my mom spent in ICU before she passed.at Lenox Hill Hospital. In NYC were billed at $15 per day. That was 1958. This Fall I had double cataract surgery that was billed at 22K per eye.
The other area of outsized increase also features the idea of not paying the full bill...higher education.
