The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gives Republicans the chance to do the right thing. For a president up for reelection in just six weeks, the right thing to do would be to hold off.
Its widely assumed that the president will soon announce a nominee and urge quick Senate action. But if Trump and his advisers are focused on his reelection, the shrewd choice would be to do the opposite.
What would he gain from this option? First, he would avoid a ferocious battle in the Senate that would most likely jeopardize several incumbent Republicans. Second, he would avoid branding himself and his party as the rankest of hypocrites. Instead, he would look almost statesmanlike.
He would also give his supporters and particularly anti-abortion voters a powerful motive to turn out on Election Day. Trump would avoid the risk of needlessly alienating those suburban women who are still undecided.
Some Republican senators must be praying to be spared a vote before Election Day. Given how Mitch McConnell quashed Merrick Garlands nomination, leaving a vacancy unfilled for 14 months, those questions would be brutally hard to answer.
Trump also has to consider the possibility of a humiliating rejection of his nominee, something that would require the defection of just four GOP senators. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska had already said she would not vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee before Inauguration Day. Can Trump count on Mitt Romney?
Several GOP incumbents on the ballot this year are trailing in the polls, including Susan Collins, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally and Thom Tillis. If Trump submits a nomination, will they really want to shackle themselves to a president who appears to be headed for defeat?

This wont happen, dems can legitimately delay this and slow walk it. Also, pubbies have neither the balls nor brains to fast track this. Anyone think Schumer wouldnt make this happen in this situation? Factor in the usual crowd of RINO idiots more interested in appearing reasonable and moderate with all the reaching across the aisle crap, trying to appease the NYT instead of doing their job. And of course the pathetic losers who would rather oppose trump than actually accomplishing something useful. Ginsburg wasnt dead 15-minutes before Murkowski rushes to the microphone to undermine trump. Theyre not called the stupid party for nothing.
Only if trump is re-elected AND the pubbies hold the senate does his nominee get confirmed, probably sometime in March.

You are without doubt a Republican. Republicans always sniff around to find reasons not to make a stand or not to fight for what is right, or just not to fight. They prefer to tiptoe around so as not to disturb anyone by their presence.
“...turning out to stop Trump being able to appoint a SC justice they consider inflammatory.”
You have got to be kidding. Inflammatory for the democrats is anyone who believes in the Constitution.
the good thing is even a bad middle of the road choice would move the court WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY right. Because Rush the Baby Killer was so far left!
Ruth I mean
Trade a fair election process for the timing of the RBG replacement nomination?
The Dems would never go for it.
I just want to point out that Trump and the republicans have until January to fill this seat and are not limited to the time before the election. And there is precedent for in the past for supreme court confirmations being done during the lame duck session. So even if they don’t fill the seat before the election and Trump loses, they STILL can in the lame duck session between the election and when Biden would take office in January. The left is SCREWED.
BAHAHHAHHHAHAHAHA
GOP has NO choice, appointment before the election. Trump announces his pick a couple days after next weeks funeral.
They can’t fulfill her wishes for the next president to be installed because they can’t keep the seat open until 2024.
:)
Last night the media was saying Trump would make his pick in the next few days.
Trump ain’t gonna fool around.
Having gone thru 2 picks already, I’m quite sure he has already interviewed most of the serious contenders.
Back in his day, Shatner was a hunk.
The strategy has been in the works for many months, He'll announce the day after the funeral next week.
After theyve pushed impeachment, fake scandals, mail ballot fraud, nationwide riots, its never been more urgent to replace RBG that right now. No hearings. Fill the seat.
The GOP had better grow some balls on this or their finished.
That is the spineless RINO answer. Never fight for what is right today when you can defer to the DemocRats tomorrow. You DO realize that the Supreme Court will be where this presidential race ends up, don’t you?
Uhhhh, nothing? Yep, nothing!!!

Absolutely. Appoint a strict constructionist to replace her...immediately !!
Nothing to do with being ‘spineless’, its about making sure the Bernie bros stay home and don’t vote. Giving them a reason to turn out might not be the smartest move. If you want to destroy a hornet’s nest its not neccessarily smart to stir it up prematurely. If Trump can get back in, as I believe he was already on course to do, the last thing he needs is for the dem base to rally.
The republican base is I believe already motivated in Trump’s favour. Biden is deeply uninspiring and I suspect many dem voters would likely have stayed home unless they feel a compelling reason to turn out and vote for someone they dislike as a corporate stooge.
No matter when the nomination is made, and no matter who the nominee is, there is going to be a ferocious battle. And I hope the nominee is prepared to have his/her life dissected and critiqued and attacked going back to their kindergarten days.
