Poll shows Collins down 12 points, Graham tied with Democratic challenger

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) face rising odds in their high-profile re-election bids, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday.

Why it matters: Many thought Graham's Senate race was a long shot for Democrats, and the moderate Collins has served as a pivotal Republican swing vote on a number of key issues during the Trump presidency.

Collins, who has criticized Trump at times but voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and to acquit the president in his impeachment trial, is down 54%-42% to her Democratic challenger Sara Gideon, Maine's House Speaker.

Graham is tied 48%-48% with Jaime Harrison, his Democratic challenger and the first African-American chairman of South Carolina's Democratic party. Meanwhile: Democrat Amy McGrath, who has raised massive amounts of cash in her high-profile Kentucky Senate race, is down 53%-41% to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to the Quinnipiac poll.

What they're saying: "Senate control hangs in the balance as the GOP confronts a likely nail biter in South Carolina and a possible knockout in Maine, offset by a presumably solid lead in Kentucky," Quinnipiac analyst Tim Malloy said in a press release.

Methodology: 1,164 likely voters surveyed in Kentucky with a MOE of ±2.9 percentage points. 1,183 likely voters surveyed in Maine with a MOE of ±2.9 percentage points. 969 likely voters surveyed in South Carolina with a MOE of ±3.2 percentage points.

We lose the Senate then even if Trump wins he becomes less than a lame duck. No federal judge appointments, no USSC appointments, nothing. The ‘Rats have already weaponized the impeachment process. With the House and Senate, they’ll be sending up articles of impeachment every month. They probably won’t have the votes to convict, but they’ll tie things up in knots and then blame it on “obstructionist Republicans” for the foreseeable future.

That doesn’t negate the point, however.

“ How did you do with the Senate? Did you pick that we would pick up 2 seats?”

I had GOP +4 in the Senate in 2018.

You were very optimistic! No way Trump wins the Presidency and loses the Senate and more seats in the House. It just doesn’t happen that way.

No I didn’t make the decision based on two vacations that Collins will lose. I was merely stating how much we love Maine. The statement Collins will lose is from a vacationer who said her opponent has flooded Maine with signs, ads, etc. Also she is behind by 13%. She was targeted due to Kavanaugh and impeachment votes.

I believe you are not a nut and are 100% correct.

Anyone who thinks this is some far out crazy prediction is living in LaLa Land.

How you are living in LLL this far into a revolution, I don't know but clearly lots of conservatives are-I guess that's why they never mounted any real opposition to anything.

As long as the Rats hold the House, there will be investigations and impeachments, REGARDLESS of who has the presidency or the senate.

Well that would be true but we can win in other states

I wish we had a stronger candidate in Jersey to challenge the empty suit/brain Booker

If Graham loses, it's his own damn fault.

Maybe his constituency got tired of his all talk but no action reign in the Senate?

All he had to do was hold hearings and subpoena FISA warrant actors.

But he wouldn't do it. And now he's in a neck-and-neck race.

This South Carolina poll is interesting.

The poll is 34-26-33 R-D-I, or R+8.

Independents are split 48-48 Trump-Biden.

However...

The Independents are leaning towards Harrison, albeit irrationally.

In the poll, Independents are breaking 50-45 Harrison over Graham.

A few questions later, for the question "would you want to see the Republican Party or the Democratic Party win control of the United States Senate, Independents favor Senate Republicans 51-41.

So, this race is coming down to personalities.

For Independent Favorable-Unfavorable:

Favorable % Unfavorable %
Harrison 46 28
Graham 37 56

For Independent "is the candidate honest":

Yes % No %
Harrison 45 24
Graham 35 57

For Independent "cares about average people":

Yes % No %
Harrison 54 26
Graham 39 55

For Independent "most important issue":

Independent % Republican % Democrat %
Economy 20 30 9
Law and order 20 41 6
Coronavirus 15 3 20
Racial inequality 13 3 23
Supreme Court 11 11 11
Health care 9 3 19

The ray of hope...

On the question "is your mind made up":

Mind made up % Might change %
Harrison 94 6
Graham 92 7

Six percent of Harrison voters say they might change their mind. Graham needs to really push his favorables, because South Carolina is losing confidence in him.

South Carolina voters want a Republican Senator, but they don't seem to want to send theirs back to keep it.

Graham has a lot of work to do to rehabilitate his image at home.
