Washington(CNN) America's top general launched an outspoken attack on the Confederacy and signaled his support for the military renaming bases named for Confederate leaders on Wednesday, in his latest public comments that seem to put him at odds with President Donald Trump.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley did not hold back in an appearance before the House Armed Service Committee, stating that "those officers turned their back on their oath," referring to the names on the bases. "It was an act of treason, at the time, against the Union, against the Stars and Stripes, against the US Constitution

But they were loyal to their states. A loyalty that was considered more important than loyalty to the Union. The Union was considered merely an association of states.

“Trump needs to ruin multiple military careers.”

Absolutely. It will certainly be no great loss to America’s defense capabilities.

I suspect after one or two of these seditious a-hole Generals end up in orange jumpsuits with no pension there might be a bit of an increase in respect for the Commander-in-Chief. I can’t imagine anything like this happening under Obama.

I publicly challenge this ClownBammy POS Mark Milley to a duel.

Of course, he's YELLA, so I won't get a response.

He appears in his photos to be a fat little feller, with a big mouth.

And I should have said that allegiance was to the Constitution of the United States, not a political entity.

“So why was not one single person ever charged with treason?”

Actually one person was charged and convicted of treason during the Civil War: William Bruce Mumford tore down the flag at the New Orleans Mint in 1862. He was tried by a military tribunal, convicted and hanged at the mint about 5 weeks after he removed the flag. New Orleans had not yet surrendered when he did this and his trial and execution was controversial at the time.

Southern generals may well have committed treason, but they were never charged or convicted of the crime, therefore under our system of justice, they aren’t traitors, you know, that innocent until proven guilty thing.

Way to throw the baby with the bath water. Nowadays’ brass do not understand professionalism but politics. IT seems society wants to hear from criminals and not from citizens with valid grievances. THe democrat party is the party of terrorism and treason as a matter of ideology, still to this day. These Generals had no party affiliation in their work unlike this dishonorable loser.

I find it funny we have on the one hand people throwing away the American baby with the bath water, and at the same time antifa which force feed us bath water by holding hostage the baby.

This man is an idiot and stupid. It was never treason.

It WAS a secession of states from the compact that was the United States.

All was fogiven after the war and in 1950’s, I think, Conferate and Union soldiers were considered equal status.

Renaming bases, removing statues and changing names shows how absolutely ignorant our people truely are.

>Wasn’t there a general pardon some years after the Civil War?

By Pres. Andrew Johnson, towards towards the end of his filing out Lincoln's term and after his impeachment and near removal IIRC. But still, in hindsight it probably was a wise move for the times or at least a mostly wise move. What I don't know, and wish I did, is did that era's congress leave any active enabling legislation for 14th §2 and §3. We'd never get decent new ones past Pelosi. If so Trump needs to dust such off and use them, NOW.

To fight Radical Democrats Trump needs Radical Republican tools.

Commissioning is done to ensure the President is fully accountable for what the military does in defense of the nation, and this is why officers serve at the pleasure of the President. It is fundamentally different in nature from the enlisted contract.

Yes, for everyone except Davis.

So, technically, the traitors did not commit treason.

Who knew Milley was an idiot too.

Although after his groveling about appearing with Trump at St John’s church, I guess it was to be expected.

Are generals students of history anymore or do they just lean on their Public Administration BS?

I think the only real question is:

Would Ike have backhanded this little bitch Mark Milley, or would he have punched him in the mouth?

THey are self hating people who hate monuments, ie people of high consciousness putting great memory in lasting value. Stone is a symbol of the desire of immortality of any soldier beyond the grave, but we are dealing here with barbarian bureaucrats who are more into the career for the military health benefit than for service to the nation and the upholding of military values.

These generals upheld their values, I do not care what this guy is saying, and they were obeying civilian orders.

Well that has happened in four years so I doubt it will ever happen.

The only Confederate facing a trial post war was Col. Wirz, the commandant of the infamous Andersonville POW camp. He was charged with war crimes and not treason.

***There were a few exceptions like Jefferson Davis***

Davis rejected a pardon and demanded a treason trial. Salmon P. Chase refused to give him one as he feared Davis might prove that secession was legal and the Union the aggressor.

Twenty staunch abolitionists each gave $5000($100000 total)in gold coin to obtain Davis’ release from prison. Among those donating were Horace Greeley and Cornelius Vanderbilt.
