Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Sunday reiterated that he doesn't support abolishing the city's police force, hours after a veto-proof majority of members of the Minneapolis City Council said they want to take that drastic step in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd.
Frey, who ordered a police station to evacuate as rioters burned it to the ground last month, was shouted down by a large gathering of demonstrators near his home on Saturday when he defied their demands to shutter the city's police forces.
"I'll work relentlessly with Chief [Medaria] Arradondo and alongside community toward deep, structural reform and addressing systemic racism in police culture," Frey said in a statement to KARE. "We're ready to dig in and enact more community-led, public safety strategies on behalf of our city. But, I do not support abolishing the Minneapolis Police Department."
Before the crowd outside his home, Frey had prefaced his comments by saying he was "coming to grips" with his "own brokenness," and by promising to put the police union "in its place." But, many protesters clearly were unconvinced, yelling, "It's not about you!" and "Go home Jacob, go home!"
Ellison, the son of state Attorney General Keith Ellison, has openly declared his support for Antifa, the left-wing group that President Trump has sought to designate as a terrorist organization. (The elder Ellison also has photographed himself with a book documenting Antifa's methods.) Most members of the city council have belonged to the Minnesota DemocraticFarmerLabor Party.

“It will be interesting to see how the adults react to this.”
I work in downtown Minneapolis and lived in the city for 30 years before escaping to a third-ring suburb.
The Minneapolis City Council has always been really liberal there’s always been an invisible brake of sorts to keep them from going off the rails.
The downtown business community. Target, the owner of the Timberwolves and StarTribune (Glen Taylor), many of the big law firms, the old school downtown Democrat establishment as well as two major stock brokerage firms will apply the right amount of pressure to a few members of the city council and get them to change their votes.
Mayor Frey will be able to veto it and won’t be over-ridden by the Council.
Frey wil lose re-election (that is, if he even bothers to run) and so will the few council members who change thweir votes. But they’ll land on their feet in some cushy job elsewhere.
This is floating around out there -
Councilor describes what Minneapolis with fewer police could look like
- County mental health professionals sent to mental health calls, not police officers.
Using fire department EMTs to respond to opioid overdose calls.
The use of “unarmed, community-oriented street teams” on weekend nights downtown “to focus on de-escalation.”
Traffic enforcement turned over to cameras and potentially parking enforcement teams.
And while there was no specific reference made to plans for handling violent crime, Fletcher says the council would “invest in cultural competency and mental health training, de-escalation and conflict resolution.”
FD’s will no longer respond.
My kids FD paramedic.
No scene secure- no go.
1. Not stopping the riots in Minneapolis on day 1, was a major factor to the continuing chaos in that city.
2. Ordering a police station to evacuate, abounding the fort, gave a green light to most of the rest of the rioters/anarchists across the country to go for broke. That was a deadly signal to the criminals that their time may have finally arrived.
[state constitutions grant municipalities and counties specific powers that cant be overridden short of a state constitutional amendment]
Alls well in the city of Manyhatepolice.
I thought that was Woody Harrelson!
They wont. Libs dont arm .
17 people ran for Mayor. Of those, 16 were DFL (Dumbcrap Farm & Labor) and 1 was Green Party.
They ran out of tear gas and rubber bullets so it was either retreat or open fire on hundreds of people. If even one person had been shot dead by a cop in Minneapolis over the last week it would’ve meant serious blood.
Reinforcements.
The liberal mayor, and the police chief blew it.

The democrat controlled media delberate miss portraying the six foot seven inch 200 plus pound Floyd as an innocent black who was being forceably restrained because he was black. When He was arrested for passing a counterfeit $20 dollar bill he was resisting arrest and was a threat if not secured but the media was not mentioning his size or reporting that Floyd was removed from a squad car because he was acting up under the influence of drugs and also later was discovered to have COVID 19. Which suggests his physical condition may have led to his death which the media turned into a murder change and a charge of serious abuse by police because of police efforts that were tried to get him who under control. The results of politically induced miss reporting began used earlier during and after the post Zimmmerman trial, then on to the Ferguson episode. Obamas abuse of the bully Pulpit led to black gangs attacking non blacks found innocently traversing black neighborhoods and to a score of murders or life changing injuries and later attacks of theft and vandalism on local businesses as well as attacks and murders of police officers during that period
Their plan is to replace white/Hispanic/Asian police forces with all-black ones (two of the four cops in Minneapolis seem to have Asian ancestry); this is wealth re-distribution, nothing more. A “jobs” program for blacks, funded by taxpayers.
Yea, most cities are like that now. Powerful downtown business interests that control politicians, or so they thought. But when push came to shove, the masses (rioters) seem to have won out. I doubt those downtown interests will be very happy seeing their decades of investment being destroyed and (uninformed) people from the suburbs no longer wanting to visit their turf.
“but it hasnt exempted municipalities in CA, NJ and VA from state-mandated firearms restrictions.”
state constitutions delineate the separation of powers between the state and the municipalities/counties ... the state is granted authority in certain matters (most matters, actually), while municipalities/counties are granted authority in other matters ... how that authority is divided varies from state to state because state constitutions vary from state to state, though most states are pretty similar when it comes to the important matters, such as the right to levy taxes and legislate major state-wide issues, such as gun legislation ...
“Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey rejects city council’s push to defund police, despite veto-proof majority”
Interesting take. The headline above made me aware the council had a veto proof majority and made me believe that all on the council are for disbanding the police.
I guess we will see what happens.
I really enjoyed that video of his walk of shame, I just wish the terrorist thugs hadn't been such lousy shots when they threw those bottled waters which were no doubt supplied by city hall.
Nice job!
The Waambulance and fire won't go into many places in Mpls. without police escort.
