New York state has 10 times the COVID-19 cases California has. Why?
San Fran Chronicle ^ | March 27 2020 | Erin Allday

New York’s coronavirus outbreak has violently erupted over the past few days, and the state is now driving the national epidemic — while on the West Coast, public health experts are wondering if an early and aggressive response saved California from a similar fate.

California reported some of the earliest coronavirus cases in the United States in late January. And in the first week of March, California and New York were neck and neck on cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. But over the past week, New York case counts have doubled every few days, and the state now has nearly 10 times the cases California does: 38,000 to 4,200.

Infectious-disease experts say early maneuvers in California, especially in the Bay Area — first discouraging people from gathering in crowds and then ordering them to shelter in place — may have had a dramatic impact, even if they came only a few days ahead of those in New York.

But other factors may also be in play. New York is testing far more people — three times as many as California — and therefore identifying more cases, for example. And it’s possible that what’s happening 3,000 miles away could be California’s future.

“New York may just be three or four days in front of us. We’re going to see an increase in the number of cases here as well,” said Dr. Warner Greene, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco who specializes in HIV but is studying the new coronavirus. “Days matter — they really matter. You think you’re fine, you’re absolutely fine, but this thing is just waiting to explode.

“But we went into shelter in place quicker; we got people apart quicker,” Greene said. “That could be a contributing factor ...

Here in Little Rock, Ar, we have drive through testing at the state medical school, so if you think your infected you can do that, I think they are doing about 500 tests a day.

This video suggests NYC hospitals are NOT necessarily testing as suggested in this article

VIDEO: Brave @Project_Veritas journalists have been to the hospitals around New York and New Jersey investigating what is really going on inside. Here is what we’ve found so far. Insiders keep sending tips: veritastips@protonmail.com

"Warmer and dryer in California."

You beat me to it. It's obvious the media doesn't want the public to know that the virus is likely seasonal (like the flu), and will decrease significantly as soon as the hemisphere warms up.

I think there is a lot of deception going on in NY.. intentionally letting it spread there, and to other states, and extreme exaggeration.

NYC has a huge Chinese population who live in densely populated areas, many of whom are 1st and 2nd generation, who travel to mainland China on a regular basis. Yes, we have a lot of ethnic Italians, and while I’m sure that US tourists returning from Italy may have infected people in NY, I’m willing bet that the primary source is China: Between legal and illegal residents, students, business travelers, tourists, etc., there are a lot of F’ing Chinese people in the NYC area, which is by far the most densely populated metropolis in the Country. Yes, California has twice the population as NYC, but its major cities are significantly less populated and not nearly as dense.

In addition, while Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, and other large cities have international airports, NYC has two major international airports, and is obviously a major port of entry for everyplace in the world, including lots of Chinese.

Also, California’s coastal climate is a lot warmer and temperate than NYC this time of the year, and in general. viruses prefer cooler climates.

As I answered on Quora

,1. The more testing done, the more cases are reported, but which does not necessarily mean there are more cases per capita: NY has done over 122,104 tests | +89,677 since last week[1]. And - New York is testing more per capita than South Korea.[2] Likewise, the US overall is now reported as having done more testing then any other country (if not more per capita)[3] with more than 579,589 test being reported (3–26), which is relevant to it now having more reported cases than any other country[4] .

2. More than half of New York's cases are in NY city, with more than 20,000 coronavirus cases[5] out a total for the state of 37,258 .

3. New York City has the highest population density of any major city in the United States, with over 27,000 people per square mile...the most populous city in the United States. Over 3 million of New York City’s residents are foreign-born, with the largest Chinese population of any city outside of Asia[6].

[1] How many coronavirus cases have been found in each U.S. state
[2] United States Coronavirus: 85,377 Cases and 1,295 Deaths
[3] Fact Check: US has done more coronavirus tests than South Korea, but not per person
[4] US overtakes China with most coronavirus cases
[5] One chart shows New York City's coronavirus cases, deaths, and hospitalizations by age bracket as the city's cases top 20,000

Is CA proving info on the criteria used for testing and the number of people tested? They are not testing.

My daughter in LA has requested it twice and been turned down twice.

She's sick and in isolation as of now but not in a hospital.

But they won't test her even though she has all the symptoms but the fever. But she RARELY runs a fever, even when she has strep.

States, cities, hospitals and doctors all know that the more coronavirus cases they have, the more attention and money they get. Is there a possibility that the figures include ordinary flu cases just to get more money?

“New York got it from Iran and Italy as well as China”

Agreed.

The Progs let it in.
Then the PC Police wouldn’t let us fight it.

And now they are lying about everything.

My 89 year old mom is sick with a fever in Dallas, and can’t get tested.

My daughter visited us in San Jose in February. She used the San Jose airport to fly home at the same time TSA agents who had it were working. She got sick about 9 days later with a respiratory bug. She still has a cough. She couldn’t get tested even though she had all the symptoms and she’s high risk due to asthma.

“Alter Kocker
old fart; washed up; over the hill

While this can be used to describe any old man, it’s more reserved for old men who are forgetful, clumsy, or now inept.

In German, it literally means “old pooper” or “old defecator”, which makes it similar to the English phrase “old fart”.”
