The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the possibility that battery defects in Tesla vehicles may have caused the cars to burst into flames.
The investigation will involve certain battery management system software updates in Model S and Model X vehicles made between 2012 and 2019 in response to an "alarming number of car fires that have occurred worldwide," according to a letter the agency sent to Al Prescott, Tesla's deputy general counsel, on Oct. 24.
The alleged defects in question are "high-voltage battery fires that are not related to collision or impact damage to the battery pack," according to the letter.

In February, a Florida man died after his Model S caught fire after crashing into a palm tree, but he could't get out because the electronic door handles wouldn't open.
In March, another Florida man died after he crashed into a tractor trailer while Autopilot was engaged in his 2018 Model S.

A bit over a year ago a U.S. Army research lab experimenting with aluminum alloys, accidentally discovered a new material which allows for the production of pure hydrogen on demand. As with a calcium carbide based acetylene production device, water and the reactive material are metered into a reaction chamber. Changing the rate at which the two materials are combined, simply and directly allow on-demand rate adjustment of the gas production.
One direct application under accelerated development is a lightweight power source for use in the field as a replacement for the individual soldiers lithium batteries included as part of the field kit. By weight it provides three times more energy. By volume, it is five times more capacity. Any source of fluid containing water will activate the system to provide an electrical output. Replacing the active material in bulk or as a cartridge, provides for speedy refueling. The fuel cell conversion device which outputs electricity and heat is instant-on in function.
A fifteen kilowatt capacity portable generating device is a parallel development. Efficiency of conversion from fuel to wheel torque when
scaled to a vehicle sized application is about three times what can be achieved by conventional drivetrains.
The technology has been licensed for civilian applications development. The weight, size, and speed of refueling advantages over lithium batteries are large. The waste material produced is a feedstock for production of aluminum based ceramic items, some antacid medications, or could be recycled to the metallic state if economical.

I heard that. Back when the Prius was getting popular, gas prices were high(er), and people were making stupid rash decisions based on those gas prices, my wife kicked around the idea of getting a Prius. What put her off was when I told her truthfully that a battery change would cost $7000. That sure puts the f*** on any gas savings, doesn’t it? It kills me how people will allow themselves to just get slammed thousands and thousands of dollars taking a horrid deal on a car to save less than $10/week in gas. It’s an insane emotional decision, you’ll never recoup that money off gas savings. I’m sure glad my wife listened to reason.
When my daughter’s battery went out at 100,000 miles, it could killed her, too. All the systems died, including the brakes. Fortunately, she just rolled to a stop. And then she finds out that she had to buy not only that 8k battery but an entire brake assembly, too, because braking somehow charges the battery.
It is pure environmental scam. The parts for the battery are environmental disaster made by child slave labor.
I heard that. They market it as saving the world, it’s a total joke designed to get your money.
It’s a relief that it fatal fires never happen in ICE vehicles. /s

[the stock was up so much yesterday, the premarket action — up another couple of bucks — doesn’t seem like it will hold. But the stock is known for volatility]
The China factory was a major accomplishment for Tesla. It’s huge and was producing test cars in ten months. China has the largest car market in the world.
Soon, they’ll be building another one in Europe.
If the corrupt politicians in California continue to harass Tesla, they could build a replacement factory in another state in a short period of time.
Longer charge times and reduced battery storage were not mentioned in the ABC report. Here is more info about the petition:
“Tesla installed a software-induced limit on the total number of usable kilowatt hours on the affected vehicles, limiting the ability of owners to charge the battery cells up to the natural and normal amount of approximately 4.2 volts, by placing battery capacity limitations, by decreasing the charging speed and by reducing the performance in terms of speed, according to the charges.”
