Federal probe launched into Tesla for possible battery defects after 'alarming number of car fires'

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the possibility that battery defects in Tesla vehicles may have caused the cars to burst into flames.

The investigation will involve certain battery management system software updates in Model S and Model X vehicles made between 2012 and 2019 in response to an "alarming number of car fires that have occurred worldwide," according to a letter the agency sent to Al Prescott, Tesla's deputy general counsel, on Oct. 24.

The alleged defects in question are "high-voltage battery fires that are not related to collision or impact damage to the battery pack," according to the letter.

**SNIP**

In February, a Florida man died after his Model S caught fire after crashing into a palm tree, but he could't get out because the electronic door handles wouldn't open.

In March, another Florida man died after he crashed into a tractor trailer while Autopilot was engaged in his 2018 Model S.

In case anyone else was wondering, the article does not say how many car fires constitute “an alarming number.”

The Tesla battery plant is just down the road from me. A few beers spread around in the right places and some very interesting tidbits emerge. The place is in total chaos.

2 predictions:

1) Discovery will be very interesting.

2) Tesla learns the hard way that the cover-up is worse than the crime.

The fire problem is compounded by the fact that a Tesla (or other EV with lithium batteries) fire is extremely difficult to put out. They can and do start burning again hours after they appear to be extinguished.

There is not enough lithium on earth for electricals to be viable... well, if they burn up to boot...

The amount of hype around this bull sht is really irritating, with all these people driving the thing claiming it is a great vehicle blablabla... with surprisingly very little reports on its deficiencies,

I wonder if mice chewing on some soy based wires caused some of the fires.

Something recently ate the wiring out of my Nitro. Cause was the soy based wiring which is food to the rats. I may have to junk a nice car because too expensive to replace the wiring and computer.

Rats chew on wires and just about anything else to sharpen their teeth. They were destroying wires long before soy came along.

These huge batteries are the elephants in the room with so-called environmentally sound cars. My daughter got about 100K out of hers in a hybrid, and then it went bad. It shut down every system in the car, obviously, but it also required a complete rehaul of the braking system. Cost 8K, but she never got the final bill (it could have been more) because...

She bought a new car...a gasoline one.
