The Secret White House Memo:Inside Trump’s Plan to Destroy Unions
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) ^ | October 15, 2019 | The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE)

This is the first segment of AFGE’s 5-part series: The Secret Memo : Inside Trump’s Plan to Destroy Unions.

A leaked White House memo, as first reported by the New York Times and then obtained by POLITICO, outlines President Trump’s plans to destroy public and private-sector unions, get rid of worker protections, cripple workers’ ability to organize, and increase profits for corporate special interests.

This explosive 19-page document was prepared in 2017 by Special Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy James Sherk, who was previously a research fellow at the regressive, anti-worker Heritage Foundation.

The memo, laced with familiar half-truths and outright lies, is proof that AFGE has been right all along in saying that the administration’s true goal in making changes to personnel rules is to “end collective bargaining” in the federal sector. It’s right there in their own words.

Federal workers are featured prominently in this hit piece as the administration’s main target.

Also on the hit list are private-sector workers. Among other things, the memo discusses ways to make it impossible for workers to unionize. It details steps to boost corporations’ profits by cutting workers’ overtime pay and redefining workers as independent contractors. It explains ways to shield mega-corporations from being liable for workers’ poor working conditions in franchises.

The administration’s divide-and-conquer strategy with respect to organized labor is as disgusting as it is shameful. But it won’t work. Across this country, our members and the members of every other labor union are getting educated, organized, and mobilized.

As the largest union representing federal employees, AFGE will continue to resist the President’s mob mentality and disrespect for the federal workforce and the work they do.

Next week we will go into detail of the administration’s plan to end collective bargaining at various agencies, including DoD, VA, and TSA.

Outraged?

I thought that unionizing government workers was done with an EO why in the hell doesn’t he overturn that EO!!!

Technically he could.

But if you have been paying attention you might recall that Obama implemented the Dream Act with an EO.

Trump wrote an EO reversing that policy and the courts put a hold on that order and then said that ending it was unconstitutional.

The Dream act EO is just a few years old just imagine trying to reverse an EO over 60 years old.

I can remember when govt. employees didn’t have a union. Had less problems with govt. employees trying to usurp elected officials back then.

Unions have destroyed themselves.

"As the largest union representing leaching off federal employees, AFGE.."

An appropriate edit.

This is possibly the most objective work of reporting that I have ever encountered.

Oh sure, I really mean that.

IOW, it's BS. And if it were a Trump policy, I'd suggest adding to it a big federal income tax hike for unionized gubmint employees.

Public sector (government) employees at the local, state, or federal level should not now, nor should they ever have a right to be union.

There was never an Executive Order regarding “The Dream Act”.
It was simply a policy memorandum from Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano.

Thanks

That makes it even more ridiculous that the courts think that it can’t be reversed.

Outraged?

Nope. Ecstatic.

Government "workers" should NEVER have been allowed to unionize in the first place. When they sit at the table, they are across from US, their bosses. They should never be able to shake down taxpayers.

Re: "union members that are frustrated that unions protect the lazy and incompetent workers"

My first job out of engineering school was a field engineer for a boiler company. I worked on a startup job in Longview, Washington in the early 70s. The plant was in the final stages of construction when I arrived. That was when I learned all about unions.

The electricians there nicknamed themselves the "FLEs" which stood for "Fat, Lazy Electrician." That was all I needed to know about unions. At the tail end of the job, it was all instrument wiring and, management simply could NOT get those lazy featherbedding guys off the job site.

The electricians were in the same union with the instrument techs?

The electricians pulled all the wiring for the instrumentation (miles of it). They weren’t the techs. The startup crew wrung out all the wiring.

Not only e.o. government “worker” unions out of existence...begin cutting budgets of each department by 5-10% each year.

Cut Defense by 5-10%? Cut the VA by 5-10%? Cut prisons and ICE and Border Patrol by 5-10%? Air traffic controllers, food safety inspectors, Coast Guard, all by 5-10%?
