Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Friday said that if the House of Representatives were to impeach President Trump, the Senate “has no choice” and would have to go to trial right away.
McConnell told NPR on Friday that “if the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.”

I’m not sure that is open and shut. I think it depends on the House and/or the Senate. I appeal to the example of the judge who got impeached and convicted - and who then proceeded to become a Congressman. I want to say it was Hastings, not sure (but for certain it was a Democrat . . .).
Remember Mitch talking about the need to cut Social Security - about 10 days before the 2018 election. It was as if he wanted to encourage people to go out and vote Democrat so GOP would lose the House - and Trump would get impeached

There was a trial for Clinton in the Senate. One of the House Republicans played prosecutor. It was voted down because the Dems did not believe that Perjury was enough of a Felony to remove a President.
And by the way, That was in 1998. Bob Dole left the Senate when he was nominated for the Republican Ticket in 1996.

There was a senate trial; they voted not to convict or whatever the term is for it. Seems to me the whole process in the Senate lasted... about 2 weeks and was right around the holidays so not much in the news at all.
More than just a few of the rank and file Leftists probably think Hillary would be sworn in since she was treated so unfairly 2016.
