Political Correctness Run Amok: Life and Lillian Gish at Bowling Green University, Ohio
brightlightfilms.com ^ | May 21, 2019 | Joseph McBride

Her many great films range from Broken Blossoms, The Scarlet Letter, and The Wind in the silent days to the 1955 masterpiece The Night of the Hunter. Her extensive work in the theater and television maintained her unrivaled standards of deep emotion, humor, intelligence, grace, and integrity. Gish’s acting is a beacon to show us our humanity, and she was outspoken in the causes of universal brotherhood and the preservation of our arts, especially film.

So it was with mingled disbelief and outrage that I read that Lillian Gish is the latest victim of our curse of “political correctness” run amok. The trustees of Bowling Green University in her native Ohio decided on May 3 to strip her name from its Gish Film Theater in the Student Union because she was one of the stars of D. W. Griffith’s 1915 silent epic The Birth of a Nation. The theater was named after her and her sister, Dorothy, who was also a star of silent films. The university gave Lillian Gish an honorary degree and had no problem proudly honoring her extraordinary legacy until protests by the Black Student Union over her participation in Birth led the university to cast her into the netherworld for representing what it calls the film’s “face of Aryanism.” (Hypocritically, the university has no plans to give away Gish’s bequest for an endowment and scholarship program or her archival collection.)

A university should be a place where the history of the arts is studied with care and perspective and the debate over artists’ legacies should be allowed to flourish, rather than a place where, as too often happens today, we try to obliterate from awareness the controversial aspects of our troubled history.

As with Islam so with Communism. Everything that preceded the advent of Communism or Islam must be effaced from the records and names and events must never be spoken of or written again. If people know history they are less submissive to the Power that Is. The Koran or the Manifesto and their attendant writings are all that anyone should know.

Bowling Green is a state university. If somehow their funding were cut by 15% in the next budget perhaps the people there will understand that there is price for everything.

The much-maligned black comedian Stepin Fetchit, a star in the 1930s, told me in 1970 that “Hollywood was more segregated than Georgia under the skin,” and things have not gotten much better in Hollywood or, indeed, in our country at large, where our current president indulges white supremacist ideology.

"Indulges white supremacist ideology" - "Indulges"? What does that even mean? The writer doesn't include a quote or policy or anything to back up his contention. He just slanders with the intentionally vague verb "indulges" since it could encompass even an unspoken white supremacist thought - unconfirmed but also impossible to disprove.

By all accounts Lillian Gish was a wonderful, humane, caring person. She had such a long, active film career, never really retired. She is rightly considered among the greatest American movie actresses.

"Birth of a Nation" is considered a great film, also the birth of modern movies. D.W. Griffith went to painstaking efforts to document everything is that film as true, and as an accurate depiction of the times. If people don't like the story, then they have a problem with the truth.

Below delivered in a sardonic/sarcastic manner...<: <:
Now you are being ‘petty & difficult’.

NO one said they didn’t want the money, they just said remove her name.

If you remove the money then you become a vindictive racist.

Just look at todays action, pelosi leaves ‘sit down’ inre The impeachment of President D J Trump, walks out of the meeting and accuses the President of covering something up - ...

She and her jackals arrive at the White House, the President tells them to knock off the BS, as they are exiting he steps out to a ‘waiting press conference’ and tells what he has just done and what the LIBs need to do to get back in his good graces.

The LIBs then counter with more accusations and say they are disappointed that PDJT didn’t take the bait...er offer that would give him landmark status.

ONLY ‘bad thing’ the Prez did is NOT have the kicking them out of his office on LIVE TV...

When we have so-called ‘leaders’ acting like fools what do you expect college students to act like?

In 1992, the Library of Congress deemed the “Birth of a Nation” as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

How long before that is revoked and all copies ordered destroyed?

She was an actress. She needed a gig.
She died before most of these cretins were even born.

Complete and utter disgrace if true. She was a very great actress who appeared in DW Griffith movies. His movies are celebrated not because they had “racist themes” but because he created the language of cinema. It is his innovations that are celebrated not his negative portrayal of, say, Thaddeus Stevens. We used to know that but we are too stupid to know that now.

She appeared in endless classics from Broken Blossoms and Intolerance to The Wind and Night of the Hunter. I saw her one woman show on Griffith at Rutgers University when students had brains. I met her twice - once at the New York Museum of Broadcasting. A great lady, a kind lady.

I’m waiting for Gone With the Wind to be pulled from bookshelves and the movie burned.

This happened in February according to Wikipedia.
