Barr served as AG for only a little over a year. He did nothing of significance. He says all the right conservative things, but whether he will vigorously pursue wrongdoers with government ties is an open question. Before beconing AG he was in the CIA, probably a buddy of B41 there, and later joined the Bush White House as counsel.

My guess is he wont initiate any action which will be controversial or inflame the Trump haters in the Beltway bell jar..

If Trump is going to give up on justice, I’m going to give up on Trump.

There’s really only two facts here that matter:

1) Barr is CIA

2) Barr was GHWB’s man

Unless you are asserting that one or both of these statements are false, I don’t see where you get grounds to make this complaint.

“I’m just sitting here recalling the online orgasm that was occurring on FR when he nominated Sessions.”

Ain’t that the truth!

I think the online talking heads can spare us their insta judgement on this guy seeing that their lauded pick was the worse AG in history.

I'm posting this message on a website where the following names were commonly posted here as ideal AG candidates:

Chris Christie
Ann Coulter
Jeanine Pirro
Rudy Giuliani

Most of these people are morons and/or TV clowns. Giuliani is highly conflicted, since he's the president's personal attorney right now.

While one can dream that Trump would only get outsiders into these positions who would drain the swamp with total capitulation of the swamp creatures ... the reality is that he is going to need some people like Barr, who was in, then out in the real world, only to return again. One needs people who understand DC.

Barr is not a partisan if my memory serves me correctly. I don’t expect him to roll over for the democraps. For him to take the job after being out of government for as long as you say, seeing how Trump ripped Sessions in public, and taking a job he once held before - I would be interested in his motivation.

But I think this is a good political move by Trump. The media and democraps just demonstrated for the past week (despite their “amnesia”) about how much they loved the greatness and bipartisan 41st President. And now Trump picks H.W.’s AG; ... are they going to rip him to shreds in the hearings and/or vote against Barr now?

I saw a commentator yesterday mention that Barr has a great respect for the integrity of institutions. Perhaps that’s a signal that one of his tasks is to cut away corruption in the DoJ and FBI and restore confidence in those agencies.

Trump had a reason for nominating him, and he’s looking at a lot of factors. Perhaps Barr being away from public service for so long is a good thing.

That shows you the depth of the knowledge people have here when it comes to picking on.

If they didnt appear on a TV screen, or was a frequent guest on a radio talk show, then they have no clue.

Do they think the AGs job is just to sit and do commentary for their YouTube channel?

There's one single issue that should absolutely define Trump's U.S. Attorney General nominee:

Does the U.S. Department of Justice function as: (1) an agency of the executive branch of the U.S. government, or (2) an agency independent of the President's authority?

I believe Barr's track record indicates he's a strong advocate of (1). That agency is filled right now with @ssholes who see it as (2). It needs to be cleaned out from top to bottom, and I believe Trump has already started this by leaving some key senior DOJ posts unfilled.

Well...to take the contrarian view here...(and I know, really know, less than nothing about this guy, like most everyone else here)...

IF you were looking for someone that could command respect from below (within the Department) and from the politicians above;

and IF you wanted someone who could achieve easy passage through the still very treacherous Senate (it wasn’t really that good an election even for the Senate);

and IF you needed someone old enough and experienced enough to understand exactly how the bureaucracy works and exactly how nasty and self-serving it is;

and IF you wanted someone old enough and with enough of his own cache that he wouldn’t be owned by someone or something...who wouldn’t give a shit about the games of the thousands and thousands of “climbers” in D.C.

Well IF all that was what you were looking for, Barr might be the kind of guy to fit all those parameters. Just saying. Trump is trying to get a government (that hates his guts to the very core) to function. If you want a revolution, you will have to go elsewhere and use entirely different means, Trump was never going to be that.

Yep. Trump might as well have picked Hillary or Mueller. The whitewash/coverup is certain now.

There will be no justice in Washington. Trump has no idea what he’s doing. imo

I’d be surprised if Barr gets too many Democrats to vote for his confirmation in the U.S. Senate. I can’t imagine anyone voting for him after opposing Kavanaugh.

Thanks for your posts. I don’t recall you Susq, but I run across Alberta often enough. I’m glad to see that there still are some threads on FR where a good quarter of the posts are actually informative. So long as they hit at least 10% I’ll stick around.

By nominating a Bush guy the Dnc must oppose or else their base will scream that they just voted for an evil Bush Republican.

The Republican team can not oppose or else they look foolish since he served before.

Acting Attorney General stays until they confirm replacement.

All the Swamp both R and R are scared of what Acting Attorney General Whittaker may or may not do concerning FISA abuse and corruption in the DOj and the FBI For Hillary and Obama. President Trump is using leverage.

For the first time ever, I genuinely feel like the idea of America - one people united by love of liberty and bound together by the rule of law - is over.

With this nomination, the neoliberal elites are all but officially above the law.

Barr may even have to recuse himself over Mueller due to prior connections, putting Rosenstein back in charge! How much more rigged can this system appear to be?

He’s deep state.

do you really think he will get massive opposition after the GHWB lovefest yesterday?

His job will be the bury the bodies and exonerate all DS actors.
