Mega Millions jumps to $868 million, second-largest jackpot in US history [$494 M cash]

No winning lottery tickets were sold for Tuesday's draw, Mega Millions officials said. The numbers for Tuesday night's estimated $667 million grand prize were 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 and Mega Ball 9.

In 2016, there was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot, according to Reuters.

The last winner for the top Mega Millions prize was on July 24, when a group of California office workers won the $543 million jackpot.

It costs $2 to play the game and the odds of winning aren't in your favor. The chance of matching all six numbers and taking home the grand prize is one in 302.5 million, while the odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are one in 24, Reuters reported.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Then you’ll just make the price of food go up.

Oh shoot, so much for that plan!

Yep....and once you've bought your initial toyset (house, car, boat, etc) you still won't be able to spend it all - provided you diversify as you mention.

Me...I'm setting up a big book/comic book/gaming/diner/Japanese restaurant /Cineplex that will run at a loss. Just so I have something to do outside the house - keeps the wife happy ;)

Good start. My plans would likewise begin with that, but would get considerably more elaborate from there.

Someone once said: money can’t buy happiness, but it can let you pick whatever kind of unhappiness you want.

Yes; I’m sure it’s better to be miserable and rich, than miserable and poor ;-)

STDs come to mind; not to mention an enormous emptiness inside that money can never fix.

I hope the person who wins all of that cash is someone who could live equally well without it.

I know that for my state, Washington, the winner is allowed to claim the prize under the name of a legally-formed trust.

HOWEVER...the state considers that all lottery records fall under the title of ‘Public records’. So, even if you claimed the prize under the name of the trust, if someone requests the information on the trust, the state has to release the information...which includes your name. This was made clear by a court case in 2008 from a Yakima couple that filed an injunction to have their names remain anonymous. The courts ruled against them.

On the plus side, there are no state or local taxes o lottery winnings in Washington, just Federal. Current one-lump-sum payout for the Mega Millions jackpot, after taxes, is $380 million. T’aint bad.

What in the world would you DO with it? You could live fine just off the interest that a fraction of it would accrue; but you’d still have so much money to get rid of.

Husband and I have been fantasizing tonight about all the good that the money could do, wisely spent....

“I got zero numbers does that win anything?”

I'm no good with odds, but IIRC, speaking of zero - you are just as likely to win with a ticket of 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 as you are a ticket with 4-21-63-14-57-81-19-8.

Even so - I just might go out an by a ticket. (Would be about the 6th ticket I've ever bought in my life!)

Pay off debts, obviously. That would eat only an utterly miniscule amount. Buy some property and build a house that works for us. Definitely give to some charities and organizations (yes, FR included). I’d also pay off debts for my family members (LEGITIMATE family members, not ‘long-lost Cousin Earl from Ottumwa’ who needs oh, only a couple million or ten...).

Beyond that, I don’t know.

290 Mil in one lump sum. Misleading site, says “no state 5ax on winnings”.

TN has no state income tax on anything.
