Dem rep on Waffle House shooting: Restrict 'access to military-grade assault weapons'

Tennessee Rep. Jim Cooper (D) called for limited access to “military-grade assault weapons” after a gunman reportedly opened fire at a Waffle House near Nashville, Tenn., killing four people.

“Nashville woke up to devastating news. We mourn the innocent victims and thank our brave first responders. Many will say now is not the time to discuss change. But now IS the time,” Cooper, who represents Tennessee’s fifth district, wrote on Twitter.

“We can and must do everything possible to prevent these tragedies and keep Americans safe," he tweeted. "That starts with restricting widespread civilian access to military-grade assault weapons.”

Police are searching for the suspected gunman who allegedly killed four people at the Waffle House, CNN reported.

A spokesperson for the Metro Nashville police said a restaurant customer stopped the shooting by rushing the gunman.

"He saw the gunman looking at his rifle. At that point, the shots had stopped. So he decided to rush the gunman, actually wrestled that assault rifle away, tossed it over the counter. At that point, the gunman then fled," said Don Aaron, according to the network.

The police department uploaded a photo of the assault-style rifle allegedly used to carry out the attack.

“We both have CC permits and ALWAYS sit where at least one of us can keep an eye on the door...”

Years ago, I heard a female police office say on TV that she always sits in a restaurant with her back against the wall, affording her a view of the entire restaurant and the front door.

I don’t blame her (or you). It’s common sense and situational awareness.

An AK-15?

Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said 29-year-old Travis Reinking’s firearms authorization was then revoked at the request of the FBI, and four weapons were seized, including the AK-15 that he allegedly used in the shooting at the Waffle House restaurant early Sunday. Four people were killed.

Aaron says the four guns were returned to the suspect’s father, who acknowledged giving them back to his son.

Police have the AK-15 and another gun found during a search earlier Sunday. But two other guns are unaccounted for. Aaron says Reinking is still at large following the 3:25 a.m. shooting and could possibly be armed with the two guns.

Aren’t there restrictions on handling a firearm while drunk in TN?
= = = = = = = = = =
Maybe they should pass a law about firing within city or county limits.
OR
Pass a law about firing into occupied buildings.
OR
Ban all night diners from staying open.
If not open, nothing can happen.

Just have to ‘think’ these things out and the answer just jumps up at you.

How did this guy get the gun? Previously in Illinois his weapons were confiscated. Later returned to family members. If the family gave them to him they are guilty of aiding him in this murder.

By calling an AR-15 a 'military-grade assault weapon', Tennessee Rep. Jim Cooper (D) has exposed himself as either a liar or an ignoramus.

The AR-15 is hardly a 'military-grade assault weapon'.

But Tennessee Rep. Jim Cooper (D) is assuredly an idiot.

Sometimes you can’t tell the difference any more. Sandoval has pretty much been a disappointment. The legislature is run mostly by dems from Las Vegas. Tough row to hoe.

Growing up where I did, we could all carry concealed at age 16 (when most of us obtained a driver’s license). Those who were younger could legally carry concealed if they also had a note from Mom or Dad.

The vast majority of shooters and other violent criminals turn out to be Democrats or Democrat leaning. If we just ban liberals the country will be so much safer.

They’re not just going after “assault” rifles they’re going after guns period. As these reports continue watch any reference to a “long gun” as “military” or “assault”.

This seriously-judgement-impaired congressman is protected all the time by armed guards. Will this dweeb give up his protection? Would I be too forward to suggest he is a fool?

Consider that most of us have no practical access to military-grade assault weapons, that would be a liberalization of the laws.

Kind of like the previous refrain that gun licenses should be like drivers licenses not meaning what they implied it meant.

As long as we let the left define the terms of the discussion, we will lose.

Suzy soccer mom in her minivan doesn't give a shit about the pedantic definitions of "assault weapons." "Does it look like an army gun?" She'll ask. "Then ban it!"

And it won't be long before the people who want AR-15s banned far outnumber the people who own them. And then it's only the matter of 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

AR-15s are not used by the military but let's be very clear about one thing ... the 2nd Amendment was specifically created to protect civilian ownership of military grade weapons. "Weapons of war."

Amendment II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Here are quotes from two Democrats, before the Dem Party became the Hate America Party, that speak specifically to the premise of civilians using arms for war...

"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important."

President John F. Kennedy

---------------------------------------------------

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."

Vice President and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey

The primary reason for the 2nd Amendment was to protect the citizen's right to own and use weapons of war to fight, as civilians, any threat to our sovereignty foreign or domestic.
