The United States could have Nordic-style welfare programs, too
Washington Compost ^ | March 29 | Elizabeth Bruenig

Posted on 04/06/2018 10:57:28 AM PDT by Dahoser

Left-leaning Americans should be thrilled that a new subgenre of political commentary has emerged aimed at explaining why the United States simply can’t brook Nordic-style welfare programs. It’s a theme that wouldn’t prompt expounding unless interest in such programs appeared to be rising, and it is. Yet the reasons adduced to argue that the United States has no hope of establishing programs like the ones enjoyed by Europe’s social democracies are more disturbing than commonly credited. .
.
.
On the above view, the United States was always doomed to merely marginal achievements where justice, equality and freedom are concerned. This is where the thinking of romantic nationalists dovetails with today’s Scandi-skeptics: If the United States has a poverty rate about triple that of Denmark, or a child poverty rate about eight times higher, or millions more lacking access to health insurance, each camp would propose, it’s at least partially due to the kind of country we are. We can tinker with policies around the edges, tweak here and there — but we’ll always be fundamentally limited by our own doomed nature. Only the self-consciously homogenous can have really nice things.

And yet, we do, somehow, manage to have some nice things: Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, universal public schools.

Did she not learn her lesson after Ben Shapiro took her to school? Maybe she should read this:

#17: "The ideal is to give people security without taking away their freedom. Its a tough balancing act."

You are quite right.

But the "good times" are over for Scandinavia. Not having a homegrown perpetual underclass of dusky people, they thought is would be "cool" to import hundreds of thousands of parasites with no cultural, no historical, no religious, and no linguistic ties to Scandinavia.

But not only did these imports lack those somewhat passive ties to Scandinavia, they brought red hot active hatred of those very ideas with them. The differences were not passive; the "guests" are hell bent on the outright destruction of their hosts.

Nice things? Bullcrap. Those are colossal frauds, building up unpayable and ultimately unserviceable debt. They will destroy us.

Her college alma mater is Brandeis (as in FDR judge Louis D. Brandeis). It is about as far left as you can get.

.....merely marginal achievements where justice, equality and freedom are concerned.

Right....So millions want to flood our country illegally to take advantage of our "merely marginal achievements". Why don't they all flock to Denmark then???
What a twit.....

On the above view, the United States was always doomed to merely marginal achievements where justice, equality and freedom are concerned.

The problem here is this writer's, and the rest of the "progressive" left's, definitions of justice, equality and freedom.

To a person who supports a republican form of government (as guaranteed by our Constitution):

Justice means being treated the same under the law as everyone else, not being given special treatment because of one's 'victim' status.

Equality means being guaranteed equality of opportunity, not being guaranteed equality of outcome.

Freedom means being free to pursue by one's own efforts the trappings of a good and happy life, not having the government give one free stuff it has seized from the people who earned it.

All of which, to a strict constructionist, are unconstitutional.

Government schools are actually built in to many State constitutions. They are conspicuously absent from the Federal constitution; therefore, Fedzilla has no authority to do anything about them.

Thank you for the correction. I should have been more clear. In most (if not all) states, public schools are constitutional at the state level, but they are none of the federal government’s business.

This author sounds more like a green-wet-behind-the-ears, naive-about-ways-of-the-world dreamer, instead of some old wrinkled, grizzled socialist liberal coot like Hillary.

Whichever she is, socialism has never worked anywhere in the history of the world, ever. Ever. Norway included.

Does anybody remember a TV program on several years ago where Oprah was in Norway, I think it was, traveling and seeing the people and making commentary.

She just gushed over Norway's socialistic society. Everybody get everything for free al la Bernie's plan.

She was in some locals' home interviewing them when she asked the question, why was their home so spartan? Lacking in things that Americans have in their homes. Sparse almost.

The woman she was interviewing told her straight out, that they wanted many things but couldn't afford them because their taxes were so high, that they didn't have any discretionary income left to over to buy anything but the necessities.

Oops!

I never saw a big, fat black woman end an interview so fast and leave, moving on to some other subject as Oprah did. Not the answer she was expecting.

Their socialism seems to be collapsing with only 20 million or so. Lets see it work with 320+ million people. A recipe for sure disaster.

“...but they are none of the federal government’s business.”

Except for that spawn of Carter called the Dept. of Education that tries to horn in at every turn. It’s too bad Reagan couldn’t deliver on that promise.
