Why We Should Lower the Voting Age to 16
The New York Times ^ | March 2, 2018 | Laurence Steinberg

Posted on 03/04/2018 9:25:53 AM PST by Trump20162020

The young people who have come forward to call for gun control in the wake of the mass shooting at their high school in Parkland, Fla., are challenging the tiresome stereotype of American kids as indolent narcissists whose brains have been addled by smartphones. They offer an inspiring example of thoughtful, eloquent protest.

Unfortunately, when it comes to electing lawmakers whose decisions about gun control and other issues affect their lives, these high schoolers lack any real power. This needs to change: The federal voting age in the United States should be lowered from 18 to 16.

Skeptics will no doubt raise questions about the competence of 16-year-olds to make informed choices in the voting booth. Aren’t young people notoriously impulsive and hotheaded, their brains not fully developed enough to make good judgments?

Yes and no. When considering the intellectual capacity of teenagers, it is important to distinguish between what psychologists call “cold” and “hot” cognition.

A new level of idiocy, even for the New York Times. It’s been decades since it was anything but a propaganda tool for the Left. Fortunately they’re going broke so maybe they won’t be around much longer.

That would also make them eligible to die on the battlefield.

Only people paying federal income tax should be voters.

Yes, I said it.

2: Must be a property owner. 3: Must be gainfully employed. 4: Must be paying personal income taxes.

Extreme, I would say so. So an elderly retired military That sold his big house and rents and pays no personal income tax because SS is not taxed unless you make a bunch of money cannot vote ? Bullspit.

Only people paying federal income tax should be voters.

A wounded veteran living on VA disability that is not taxed cannot vote after shedding blood for the right to vote. I'll wait on the side to see how that works out.

Oh my goodness, it's a flashback... "Wild in the Streets, c. 1968"

Theme song and everything, by Max Frost and the Troopers:

“Raise it to 35. No single women, non-homeowners allowed to vote AT ALL!”

No single women??!! If you did that, the Democrats would never win another election!

They offer an inspiring example of thoughtful, eloquent protest.

Are you kidding me? Hurling vicious personal insults, and recycling tired old false leftist talking points is "thoughtful, eloquent protest"?

What they've shown is that the voting age should be raised to 21...and certainly not lowered.

This is the most idiotic idea from liberals ever. Basically, it’s an admission that only ignorant, self-assured fools are liberals.

I might have gone for it 150 years ago, when many 16 year olds were working, either helping their own or starting a family, taking on responsibility...

The phrase originated with Francois Guisot (1787-1874): “Not to be a
republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is
proof of want of head.” It was revived by French Premier Georges
Clemenceau (1841-1929): “Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of
want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head.”

No persons not net positive in government support (taxes-benefits) should vote in the next election. Note that this does NOT include Social Security (the non-crazy check type).

So let me get this straight: Lower voting age to 16 because kids are so smart and mature, raise gun purchase age to 21 because kids are stupid and immature?

Bingo!

How about this...

All verified US citizens 18 and older may vote, UNLESS...
a. Someone else claims you as a dependent. or
b. You are receiving government welfare (any form). or
c. You commit a felony.
