Trump stuns GOP, Dems with impassioned push for gun control
nypost ^

President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.

The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.

The bill — written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. — failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.

But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.

“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation — people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support,” Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.

“I think it’s time that a president stepped up. I’m talking Democrat and Republican presidents, they’ve not stepped up,” Trump said.

Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

Exactly! I thought Freepers were intelligent but so many here have not figured out Trump yet. It’s quite humorous.

“So then, let me sum up. DJT has decided to throw away the midterms and get impeached.”

It looks more like you are the useful idiot.

“Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.”

That is a flat out lie. What he said was don't put it on this bill because it wouldn't be likely to pass. Do it as a separate bill.

We would to very well here on FR not to be sycophants for media lies.

Nope, my undies are not in a twist. I take him at face value. Perhaps you have intimate knowledge of him, and thus know his innermost feelings.

There are some on FR who come down like a ton of bricks on those of us who express some alarm, and they say “Don’t pay attention to what he says, just pay attention to what he does.”

Well, paying attention to what he says got him elected. We believed his words. If we were not supposed to pay attention to that, and believe him, we’d have that banshee Clinton in office today.

Express alarm all you want. You don’t seem to understand that is a big part of this beltway theater performance.

The idea here is to get POTUS reelected. We can’t let the media and Dems outflank him. So that’s why he does this televised stuff and throws out all kinds of ideas that will never happen.

I agree with you.

Why do people here read lies, believe them without checking, then blast off without using their brains?

It would be better to teach every American to fight back with everything you have when faced by a shooter. You cannot depend on police to do it for you. There will not be time. You must save your own life or lose it.

"These crooks are still walking free and the swamp is not getting drained as promised."

I've been in support of most of what the president has done, but this is just killing me.

I did and you have it wrong. That’s my point. Why would you believe what the media says without checking to see if it’s true and in context?? It’s so easy to verify, just watch the video in context. Since when do we here on FR not do due diligence with what the media wants to shove down out throats?

Every single person who wants to comment on what Trump said yesterday needs to watch the video first.

I'd like to think so. Sounds like he's dangling a hook to see who'll bite.

Rather like DACA, he gave Dems a taste of it, then took it away. It's a negotiation strategy to get someone to overcommit.

We'll see. They're still in the "Talking about it" stage. What happens when the rubber meets the road?

Trump sounded exactly like a gun-grabbing liberal. He’s also started badmouthing the NRA. The NRA has one goal. To protect the 2nd
Amendment. They’ll turn on Trump if he betrays it’s members. The only thing the NRA will go along with is getting rid of bumpstocks.

What a difference 250 years makes.
After the Enoch Brown school massacre in 1764,the citizens marched on Philadelphia and demanded the Pacifist Quaker government give them guns and militia (the police at the time) for protection. The Quakers said..”NO”, but later relented.

Today, people march on Washington, demanding “Give us Safety! Take our guns!”

A strange world indeed.

“This really has me on edge along with the move by Wally World and the other virtue signalers taking away the civil rights of 18-20 year olds.”

If 18-20 year olds cannot possess rifles, and must wait until they are 21, then Congress needs to change the Selective Service law, and require registering for Selective Service at age 21, not 18.

Trump got great TV and the Dems were cumming all over themselves! Same as he did with DACA. But now look at his text and see what he is emphasizing today:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump · 2h

Many ideas, some good & some not so good, emerged from our bipartisan meeting on school safety yesterday at the White House. Background Checks a big part of conversation. Gun free zones are proven targets of killers. After many years, a Bill should emerge. Respect 2nd Amendment!

We will see...TRUMP is a goner if he doesn’t support strong 1A and 2A.

Everyone is missing the angle here. The GOP needs to harp on the fact that it is Hollywood that GLAMORIZES terror, guns and violence in movies NOT the gun itself that is the game changer here. Yet that would go against their money making bottom line...but that is what the GOP should be pushing as the big cause of increase in violence - movies and all the prescribed mind controlling drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have been listening to Varney. It sounds like he’s totally onboard with the gun control things Trump, Feinstein, etc., were talking about.

Quote: “It looks more like you are the useful idiot.”

Nope, just not going to blindly support this. The facts are out and it wasn’t the gun or the NRA. It was the government. What good would a billion laws do if the government won’t enforce them? I am not a conspiracy mood by any means but it is ironic that the government was warned over twenty times about this guy. It makes it seem as if they were hoping he would do this so they could use it. Nah,that would be nuts to suggest such a thing.

Regardless, Trump should not even be entertaining this NRA as the bad guy narrative and he is. Troubling and yes, potentially the end of his Presidency.
