So What's the Difference Between Now and When I Grew Up?
vanity | Feb 15, 2018 | ML/NJ

I don't know. I'm asking.

I graduated high school in 1964. During the entire time I was in school Wikipedia reports that there was one incident where three people were killed in US schools, and none where two people were killed. There was an average somewhere between one and two incidents a year where one was killed.

Guns were MUCH MORE AVAILABLE then. Schools had rifle teams. I shot an untethered .22 at Coney Island. I shot guns at Boy Scout Camp. Anyone who thinks that more gun restrictions now would help is oblivious to this.

We also played with make-believe guns. My cap pistols looked like real guns. We played Cowboys and Indians. I'm not a fan of the shoot-em up video games, but it's hard to see how they are very different from the games I played.

So, what's different? Movies and TV shows are different. Respect for the US is different. Victim mentality is different. Respect for religion is different. There's a lot more welfare and a lot more taxes. Manners are different, or non-existent. I think government schools are different, but I haven't been in one for 50+ years so I'm just guessing.

We need to return to what worked. Continuing with more great solutions that make things worse strikes me as the wrong way to approach the problem we have.

I could not disagree more.

Housing prices went up BECAUSE of dual incomes! The housing market went up relative to what families could afford. Prior to feminism and dual incomes, a single income (male/father) family could afford a home! Now, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT IN TODAY'S MARKET.

Lots of boys, right after the Civil War, were raised by widowed mothers.

The same was true for reasons, other than wars, for kids throughout history. War, famines, and disease carried off many a parent throughout all of history, yet there weren't mass shootings by teen boys.

This latest shooter was adopted by far too old childless parents. His mother was 49 or so when he was adopted, his adopted father died 10 years later, and supposedly he was never "right" to begin with.

A great way to sum up the cause of these shootings is ‘left wing culture’ they have destroyed all of the pillars and foundations of the country.

There’s a difference between not having a father because he died, and not having a father because the mother just wasn’t into him anymore. The difference to the child is quite profound, psychologically: the first is something that happened due to acts of God, the second is something that was done to the child on purpose by human beings, often for the lamest of reasons.

The answer is in Romans 1:18-32. I dare anyone to read it and tell me that’s not what’s happening.

We were an optimistic society. WW2 and Korea had ended, and Viet Nam hadn't exploded. Our culture was about positive influences. Decency and security abounded. People weren't hung up on their grievances and could laugh off imperfections. There was a belief in the future.

We've been at endless war for over 16 years now. People are disconnected from their communities. Our "culture" is violent and doesn't promote positive values. Political correctness and the dictates of the perpetually offended have taken away our freedom to think for ourselves.

etc

“I agree. I graduated HS in ‘64 also, and what you describe is true. “

I graduated HS in 1957. Imagine my joy with all this shit.

I believe much of the problems we face in education are due to liberalism/leftism which has given us the following:

1. Creation of the Dept of Education
2. Banishing the Bible & Ten Commandments from public life
3. The rise of the welfare state,
4. Political Correctness

And the so called MSM fuel the flames. I was born in 1964 also. We have very few true reporters today. Most are partisan hacks spewing out hatred, not news. Their intense dislike for anything that they don’t agree has infected our culture.

It isn’t hard to figure out.

However, most people won’t say it, and that is a problem.

God has given us up.

No, too many of us have given God up.

God is still there calling to us but too many dismiss that call.

Too many also refuse to confess their faith in public because they are afraid to be ostracized, be dismissed as Jesus Freaks.

Time for people to stop being wimps and cowards, and to stand up for Western civilization while it can still be saved.

The Rule of Law rather than the rule of men is a western concept. It is, more than any other thing, what made America prosperous. Non-westerners simply don’t have this tradition which is why they haven’t done as well despite, in some cases, thousands of years of head start.

People were capable of feeling shame when I grew up.

That made me smile. I talked about that very thing today over lunch with my adult son.

No social media provocateurs/networks, a semi-independent news philosophy and media companies that had actual news reporters existed back then.

Now all you need is a website, a catchy handle and bada beem bada boom, You too can be a “reporter”/instigator.

I agree with most everything posted here as to the causes. I would add that it’s not just school shootings - you can see the moral decay in everyday life. Video posted on the internet showing kids beating defenseless younger children, or outnumbering another 10 to one and no one steps in to help. The left dividing us into groups and pit us against each other. There are many reasons. What would it hurt to allow God back into our schools? Even if you aren’t a believer, it can’t hurt and it just might help.
