A member of the U.S. men’s figure skating team got his leotard in a twist because Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to lead the U.S. Olympic delegation to South Korea in February.
Adam Rippon, the 2016 U.S. men’s figure skating, pitched a particularly nasty hissy fit — telling USA Today he would prefer not to shake the vice president’s hand before the opening ceremony.
Mr. Rippon is believed to be the first openly gay Winter Olympian — and he took great umbrage at the vice president’s devout Christian faith.
“You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?” Rippon snarled. “I’m not buying it.”
Mr. Rippon, the poster child for tolerance and diversity, went on to say the vice president and the Trump administration do not represent his personal beliefs.
“I don’t think he has a real concept of reality,” Mr. Rippon said. “To stand by some of the things that Donald Trump has said and for Mike Pence to say he’s a devout Christian man is completely contradictory. If he’s okay with what’s being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called ‘s***holes,’ I think he should really go to church.”
Sadly, Mr. Rippon did not bother to do his homework before attacking the vice president. It turns out — he never supported gay conversion therapy.
“The vice president is proud to lead the U.S. delegation to the Olympics and support America’s incredible athletes. This accusation is totally false and has no basis in fact,” the vice president’s spokesperson said. “Despite these misinformed claims, the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the U.S. athletes competing next month in Pyeongchang.”
The male figure skater also said he will not be attending a post-Olympic celebration hosted by President Trump at the White House.
Let’s just hope the fragile figure skating snowflake can muster the decency not to stage some sort of outrageous protest during the Olympics.
It’s one thing to embarrass yourself and your family in USA Today — it’s another thing to embarrass an entire nation.
“I will participate in no form of protest. I’m representing myself and my country on the world stage,” he reassured the newspaper. “What makes America great is that we’re all so different. It’s 2018 and being an openly gay man and an athlete, that is part of the face of America now.”
Adam Rippon may know how to land a triple axel, but when it comes to civility and grace, he’s skating on thin ice.
Like there is any shortage of gay skaters.........
Perhaps Mr. Rippon should join or start up the Gay Olympics.
VP Pense represents ALL Americans, including Mr. Rippon.
I hope Adam Rippon falls on his @$$ so many times that he is unable to medal.
Openly gay Olympians: Brian Boitano is gay, but he was not open about it, nor was he being a prima donna about it.
Johnny Wier was open about it, and he squandered his talent, which was immense, by promoting his gayness over his abilities. After he flaunted it with ridiculous skating attire, I never again enjoyed his skating. Adam Rippon has damaged his image going into the Olympics.
Brian Orser of Canada is gay, but was not advertising it in 1888. Rudy Galindo is gay also.
The impression that all male figure skaters are gay is incorrect - however, the percentage of high ranking male skaters being gay is above the average expected in the population.
In Russia, which has excellent male skaters, I have never heard of a homosexual among the elite skaters. Russians promote and admire artistic dance and sporting events; therefore it is not associated with homosexuality.
In the USA, a macho attitude results in male athletes avoiding sports which are more ‘artistic’. Yet, I am not aware of any elite male gymnasts coming out as gay.
In diving, however, Greg Louganis, came out gay after his competitive diving was completed.
Personally, I wish our culture would cease and desist in even talking about who and what people are doing privately regarding their sexuality.
One more thing - Charlie White, the greatest ever male Ice Dancer [IMHO], is not gay.
Charlie skated for years with his partner, Meryl Davis, and they were so spectacular that they upset the Canadian favorites, Tessa Virtue and ... Moir. Charlie dated lots of skaters, and after the last Olympics he zeroed in on Tanith Belbin, another ice dancer who was our national champion with her skating partner, Ben Agosto just prior to Davis and White. In fact they were competitors.
Charlie and Tanith married in 2016, and this past autumn became parents of a baby boy.
I looks like this gay blade who is calling for tolerance is showing intolerance.
Adam Rip-One shouldn’t even be going to the Olympics. He didn’t skate well in the US Nationals and came in fourth. Ross Miner skated better and came in second. Ross should be going. I predict Rip-One will not even make the top ten.
