Where to Move? Time to Retire and Find a New Life.
01.15.18 | chickensoup

The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.

I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.

I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.

Any ideas?

Amen, even NE Johnson County, KS!

Great schools (even though your kids are grown, you need a great school system to get lots of other perks of an enjoyable lifestyle and comfortable resale, should you decide to) affordable housing of all kinds: single, condos, apartments, own or rent long term.

Small, friendly police departments who know your name and look out for you and your home, should you be traveling.

Door-to-door mail delivery (If in an older single family development) comfortable building codes and restrictions. Kids to mow lawns, shovel snow and water your flowers when you travel.

Taxes not too high and voters who balk at raising them when pols think they need raising.

An airport 30+ minutes away and easy in and out, with 2.5 flights to anywhere warm when you tire of too many cold, snowy days.

Right now, we’re about halfway through winter with less than 5” total snow!

Come visit sometime, you’ll find we’re very friendly and you just might want to stay awhile!

Kentucky is a great place to live. Some winters, like this one, are real bummers but the other seasons are almost always nice. Some uninformed or misinformed think we’re all a bunch of rednecks. Granted, some are but most ain’t.

Welcome! I’m in LA too, so we can empathize. I have a friend in Reno, and cousins as well. I love the Lake Tahoe area for sure.

I’m from Alabama and wouldn’t mind living in Pennsylvania. Well, except for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

When I was fourteen years old, we were traveling to Michigan from Providence, Rhode Island. We went through Central Pennsylvania and it was beautiful.

I’m also a fan of older homes, especially older homes, and Pennsylvania has some of the most beautiful homes with lots of character and history.

Although I retired to Arizona, I spent most of my life in the suburbs around Kansas City and grew up in Johnson County. It is still one of the best places to live in the whole nation. Just had my 50th high school reunion and we marveled how fortunate we were to grow up there.

I remember of buddy of mine who used to tell people he interviewed for his company in the KC area, “you need to appreciate that we have all four distinct seasons of the year, you have to like them and you will never be bored by the weather.”

I was thinking Emmett was a possibility, then I saw your post.

Currently I live in the Treasure Valley, not far from there.

I’m not ready to retire and leave NE Ohio but in my travels, I would probably most like to settle in the Hill Country. Pastures of Heaven.

Sherriff does seem to have a thing for his deputy, though. How long before she does a #MeToo on him?

Washington, Oregon, and KA are rolling out more taxes and anti-freedom laws as we post.

you need to like your destination in reality, not just in theory.

Spot on, KC. Friends moved to the Hill Country of TX from CA to be close to their girls in Austin and Houston. They are very unhappy with the location (but like being by the kids and grandkids). They liked it in theory, but not reality as you put it.
