The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.
I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.
I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.
Any ideas?
Washington state has no personal income tax. Live near the border with Oregon and shop in Oregon, because that state has no sales tax. However, tax laws can always change.
Sidney, Nebraska has houses and real estate going for deep discount as many Cabela’s employees leave their former corporate headquarters town following the merger with Bass Pro Shops.
2.5 hours to Denver, 1.5 hours to Cheyenne, drier (way less humid) climate, easy I-80 access, etc. Read in Sunday’s paper (www.omaha.com) that even a few Californians are leaving and resettling there.

Durango is a neat town.
All suggestions aside, please consider that you may want to visit kids and grandkids as you retire.
We have ten grandkids and despite loving the southwest, it takes us 7,500 miles of driving each year to see them all. Now I will caution, as soon as you move to an area to be right near ones kids, they do likely move, so there is a balance to seek. I traveled quite a bit in my work and the southwest was my destination at retirement by choice.
I’ll put a vote in for Pennsylvania. Lots of traditional rural towns, four seasons but not too much winter, and easy to get to other parts of the country. Avoid the cities.

The growth the past decade on the Front Range is just staggering. It’s almost non-stop urbanization from Ft. Collins down to Colorado Springs. Miles and miles and miles of development. I, personally, don’t find the area as attractive as it used to be. But the population of the country has zoomed from 150 million when I was a kid to 330 million today, so most places that were nice 30 or 40 years ago are overcrowded now.

Seriously, you want friendly, beautiful, four seasons, and a lot of history? Charleston, SC. Friendliest people I have ever seen. The only place, in fact, that I worry after a salesclerk interaction, if I had been rude. They way outfriendly me and I am quite friendly.
It isn’t a small town but it has so many places, islands, etc, that have that small town feel. At least go and check it out.
Unfavorables include occasional hurricanes and lots of military jet and ordinance noises. (Don't bother me at all, but not everyone appreciates them.)

You don't avoid property taxes when you rent. They are included in the rent. Ask any landlord to confirm.
