I Was Verbally Abused And Humiliated By My Army Drill Sergeant in 1969 (*SOB*)

It's true, I can't believe I've held this incredible pain inside me for so long but I have to tell somebody how cruelly and unfairly I was treated, Oh so long ago.

I was new to the Army, heading to Basic Training in 1969, wanting to make a difference and serve my country and America but what I encountered shook me to my very core.

Me, a wide-eyed recruit, got off the bus at Fort Lewis Washington and was immediately yelled at and verbally abused by this looming, big, (and mean), Staff Sergeant named SSG Gritman.

He singled me out immediately because he hated me and made me fall into a position I would come to know and hate, the FRONT LEANING REST Position, (*SOB*), to do push-ups I didn't deserve to do because I was nice person!!

This monster of a man continued to demean and harass me throughout the entire 8 weeks of training, always singling me out as if I were his pet DOG, never relenting, never cutting me slack, never saying he was sorry!

Well, here it is, the reason I confessed my pain and suffering from so long ago; I want to find former Drill Sergeant Gritman, and have Congress indict him on charges of having been mean to me those many years ago.

"I was beaten with a 12” stick, because I didn’t memorize something that was in the book I was given."

I'm a female, and when I was nine, my fourth grade teacher was a black female, a very pretty woman named Miss Johnson. That was back in 1956 in Rochester, NY. A group of us kids were having problems with math, so she singled us out and told the rest of the class we were members of the "Dumb Bunny Club." At the time it was embarrassing, but it forced me to get my $hit together and learn what was required of me. I'm 70 and still hate math.

Been there. Done that.

Probably in the same barracks and in the same silversides.

I too was at Ft. Lewis for basic in 1969. D-4-2 Delta Dragons. Fortunately my father was a raving lunatic and the drill sergeants just made me laugh. Amateurs.

In 6th grade Mr. Arnold made me stand in the corner of the room for an hour for talking too much. 33 years later that incident still makes me cry uncontrollably at various times of the day. I demand recognition for my suffering!!!! (S)

In 1958 my teacher spanked me with a wood board for talking in line after lunch, twice. It was a Tuesday at 12:35, I was the fourth kid in line, it was sunny about 76 degrees. I was wearing jeans and a blue tee shirt and sneakers (brown with white trim).

I didn’t cry. That mean old Mrs. Condon (room 12)

I had SSG Nunnely, FT Gordon 1968. He was a mean black man. I’ve never been so traumatized. I think I have PTSD.

Every P.I. Recruit Was Physically & Verbally Abused, Stomped, And Mentally Strengthened in 1951. (*Deservedly So!*)

We used to read “Sad Sack” comics as a kid, and “Beetle Bailey” in the comic strips.

Ahhh, yes. The cattle car that took us trainees to far away places on base, from which we were expected to walk back, in double time, if the drill sergeant was not happy.

Just tonight I realized I was sexually harassed in college.

It was the first week of my freshman year. My roommate’s girlfriend and her roommate came to our room at night.

We were drinking a lot of beer. And then, more beer. Later on the gal started putting her hands all over me and saying really naughty things.

Then I passed out. I’ve regretted that moment for 40 years.

Excellent. Suitable for the many pseudo-injustices we’re forced to endure daily.

And to think my drill sergeant left me black and blue from my shoulders to my toes at Leonard Wood in '86.

I was just ecstatic that no bones were broken.

In ‘66 we had Master Sergeant Filimino Imperial A-3-10 Ft. Ord. All of 4ft 6”, and that included a perpetual smile on his face. That smile was his trademark. I believe he wore it as part of his uniform. His Smokey the Bear hat was bigger than him, but you didn’t even mess with the man. It was “YES SIR!”, and you meant it from the bottom of your soul.

Oh Yeah! Then too there was Sergeant Roosevelt Cummings.

When I was in Navy bootcamp they used to call us nasty names and makes us carry heavy rifles. We were forced to learn to fight dangerous oil fires. What horrors. Then I was sent to Vietnam. (Sob). So unfair. But these poor college kids have it so much rougher today. I feel so sorry for them.
