An elementary school principal in Gloucester is apologizing for a controversial Halloween display at a school party.
The parent teacher organization hosted a fundraiser at West Parish Elementary School Friday night and one of the parents brought in a bean bag toss game that included fake tombstones.
One of them had the name Don Trump on it.
Offended parents sent pictures to Massachusetts Republican Party committeewoman Amanda Orlando Kesterson, who shared one of the photos on Facebook.
Politics does not belong in an elementary schoolany politics, she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030s Kendall Buhl. But its particularly egregious to be putting the name of the sitting US president on a tombstone.
Principal Dr. Telena Imel apologized in a letter to parents.
Intentionally or not, it inappropriately brought a political agenda into what was designed to be a fun family affair, Imel wrote.
Our school, and this includes school events sponsored by related groups, is not the place for politics. In planning future events, it will be made clear to organizers that school is not the place to engage in or to display political agendas or opinions.
The parents involved have since apologized, and Kesterson says shes satisfied. She feels the resulting discussion over what is appropriate political commentary has been a good thing.
The City of Gloucester does not condone political messaging within our schools. Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken said in a statement Monday.
We share the sentiments outlined in recent school administration statements and have made our expectations clear. We support the Superintendents Office in their efforts to provide a meaningful resolution and believe that the school administration is responding appropriately toward our community.
If it was Obama’s name on that tombstone, the secret service would be all over that place.
Like I said...
We would still be hearing about it if someone had used O’s name on a tombstone when he was in office, or even now for that matter. It also would have been shouted from the rafters that it was somehow racist to boot.
Public school employees.....scum of the earth
“Public school employees.....scum of the earth”
That’s a terrible generalization. I was a public school employee for part of my life. I am NOT scum. Please think before you tar everyone with the same brush.
How pathetic do you have to be to get a job just to ruin kids minds with leftist garbage? Leftists hate children.
Good on you. As our former community organizer said “they bring a knife, we bring a gun”. Gotta keep the pressure on these people.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
All this garbage they do with Trump that they wouldn't dare even consider with obama.
You do know that there are FReepers who work in public schools, don't you? I've never really considered myself the scum of the earth.
where in MA please?
My wife is a bus driver, and some people like to type crap knowing they wold never say it to ones face.
That is unbelievable! Or, sadly, not. I’m so glad you turned in that creep. Can you imagine what else he has said/done and gotten away with? I teach in an army town in Texas, so it’s a pretty conservative school district. I was certainly no fan of Obama’s, but I would NEVER have said something about him to my students that was equivalent to what your daughter’s teacher said, or ANYTHING negative, for that matter. I cannot fathom it! I don’t ever even tell my students how I’m voting when they ask. I will confess that this past election day I wore an Old Navy t-shirt with an American flag on it and a pair of shoes that were red patent leather with little gold elephants all over them (they probably sound hideous, but, trust me, they are adorable!). That outfit was the one hint of my political leanings, and I certainly don’t think my elementary students picked up on it; it was just for myself.
Please keep us posted if you ever hear of anything else inappropriate from your daughter’s teacher. Wow.
I agree with you! There is no way we can know everyone else’s story...not even fellow FReepers’ stories. I realize that most FReepers pooh pooh the public education system, and fairly enough, but they should be glad that there are some of us there to counterbalance the looney leftist teachers’ influence.
I have a TON of respect for your wife! I can’t imagine how difficult her job must be some days! Her students are so fortunate to have her as their driver. Whether she is a FReeper, or simply married to one, she must be a strong, great lady! Please tell her hello from a fellow public school employee in Texas!!
I agree , and thank you for the kind words about my wife.
Narragansett Regional, in Templeton/Baldwinville
You’re out by Worcester , Framingham if memory serves me right.
Just goes to show even out there there are lunatic liberals.
When I post an image, I always add a ‘width=”300”’ parameter to the < a > tag. This restricts the width of the image to 300 pixels wide, and adjusts the height proportionally.
If it looks too small, try 400 for the width.
Or previous presidents like Obama. Truth be told, the Left are hypocrites.
Lol. Yup.
