Raging Wine Country Wildfires Burn Homes; Force Evacuations
CBS SF Bay Area News ^ | 10/08/2017 | CBS Staff

NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.

The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.

Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.

The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

thank you for such sage advice...

I put this up simply because there was nothing in breaking news earlier...much like a hurricane thread—to provide information...let people know this is happening...

and I did let a couple “judgement posts” fly by...you know California is being judged posts...

However, if comments are directed to me...I have a right to commment back...

I was reasonable but poster got rather obnoxious...So I asked them to leave...I would ask someone at a concert to do the same...Can’t make them, and I am not controlling anything, but their continued commenting is not helpful or appreciated by pretty much everyone trying to keep up with the news of the fires.

I have seen posts pulled and mods actually say “Knock it off”

Frankly, I and many others are quite sick and tired of some Freepers wishing for or nearly gloating over bad things happening to people who happen to live in red states because of their politics. You know, Norks can take out California, etc...It is wrong and makes Freepers look no better than the liberals who are doing the same thing...i.e., wishing ill for all Trump voters.

Would someone please fill me in, since it’s not readily apparent by the news sources, but what exactly is burning?

Is this grasslands? Forests? Scrub? Fresh tar?

Can anyone answer this?

fwdude, here is Dailymail article which seems to have a lot of pictures, some info...Seems Sonoma was hit hard...the town...lost Hilton, Sonoma HOtel, K-mart,Applebees, etc...so those are town areas...

A “time out” would help. But that is not my decision to make.

Once again, if you put up a thread, ya better expect comments you don’t agree with or dislike. It’s goes with the territory. And it's been that way before you ever got here.

I and many others are quite sick and tired of some Freepers wishing for or nearly gloating over bad things happening to people who happen to live in red states because of their politics.

Ya think you're going to change that? Think again. Maybe you should put up a site for good news only, where only comments you agree with are approved and accepted.

All I saw were structures engulfed, not the general lay of the land and its flora.

But the map was horrific in the extent of the fires. I found that more shocking than the photos!!!

Yes, I saw that there are dozens and dozens on the map—my son is in Bay area—not affected so far...

Here is live coverage I just found on Youtube...

I put out an all post, so hopefully you get an answer to your questions about the type of land. From my experience in Sonoma, it is a lot of farm land, but there is also Lake sonoma and some mountainous areas...some good video now...

Have you by any chance heard of anything in Petaluma? My sister lives there, though she isn’t home at the moment (in the northwest while this happened).

They are still sorting things out.

I am a mile from the evacuation zone. My old high school (Cardinal Newman), the homes of several friends, historic structures, a coutple of neightborhoods, wineries and a bunch of businesses from K mart to Trader Joes have been burnt to the ground or close.

The problem is that this area has always burned every few years, just people decided to build homes and businesses in the middle of it; at least the Mexicans were smart enough to use mud and tile roofs.

It is dark enough that lights came on and stayed on all day.

The scale is overwhelming. I’ve lived here, in the same house for 49 years. Never seen anything remotely like this, 9=11 would be the closest thing I’ve ever seen- mile after mile of people in shock, thousands of folks having their lives changed forever. Many hard working responsible adults just in utter shock, home gone, business gone, roads closed, ashes everywhere.

The local rag is annoying and incompetent, but they have a few photogs who know what to do.

Currently, I have power, not sure how much longer that will last. Everything, nearly, is closed. Gas is hard to get. I’m a pretty serious prepper, as we are right on an active and powerful earthquake fault here, so better off than many, but who knows what the toll will be. Entire neighborhoods of nice houses wiped out, the Oakland Hills fire times 10.

Stupid rag, but probably the best coverage currently

Nope I don’t expect to change anyone, but maybe if people are aware that they are offensive and perhaps others don’t share their skewed “California needs to be nuked” “deserves an earthquake” type of view, they will consider thinking before posting.

Sorry, I why should I have to let crap like that fly by without comment. I put thread up and I don’t stand for obnoxious comments forwarding bizarre idea that redstate residents “deserve what they get” thinking...

Oh and thanks for the continued hijack of the thread. Done with this ...I will just ignore you and the other curmudgeons..

Sonoma is the county; but it’s a small town, Santa Rosa is the largest town and was hit hard, It’s where I live

So sorry to hear this. So unreal these fires could come out of nowhere like this.
Used to live in the city; and was back last year for the SF Marathon.
Napa and Sonoma are beautiful places.

Haven’t paid that much attention but is this the result of just leaving forests alone? The “Mother Nature will take care of it” nannies.

Spent many hours in Europe and they all always cleaning up their forest underbrush. They are using their brain on this one. ( or at least for this. No comment on the rest of their mess.)

That and people building houses in areas that burn often. throw 20 thousand houses on some hillsides that have burned every few years for centuries and stuff happens. At least the Mexicans had the sense to use mud and tile.
