A group of mountain researchers hiked the length of the Alps this summer, retracing a similar trek 25 years ago. Much has changed since then, especially when it comes to the environment.
At lower elevations, forests are drying out and tree-killing beetles are spreading. Orchards have been damaged by extreme spring weather, as severe cold snaps follow early warmups. Among the summits, some glaciers have retreated out of view and the permafrost that holds the rocky crags together is thawing.
Extreme rain storms have become more frequent, triggering ever-larger landslides that are reshaping mountainsidesso much that the path of the hike had to be altered in some places. Some historic trails have crumbled away and the melting alpine glaciers this summer have disgorged several bodies of climbers who vanished decades ago.
"These are all signs of climate change," says Swiss Geographer Harry Spiess, one of the four mountain scientists and one of the Whatsalp hike organizers.
Climate models project the southern mountains will see more drought and heatwaves, but also more extreme rain and snowfalls. The northern foothills will rarely see snow in the future, and will be vulnerable to flooding from more powerful Atlantic storms.

If they dislike the mass tourism to the region...just rope it off, and deny entry (to include the environmentalists). Lets see how far that goes.
About ten years ago, I had this chance to drive via a lousy secondary road, in mid-summer from the Italian side of the border....over the Alps...to reach Austrian side. Best drive of my life. Burned out my brake pads entirely.
Mountains are not static.
Tree-killing beetles
So they know admit that man is not the sole living creature that is killing the planet? Maybe some DDT could stop them
Thank goodness the climate changed where I live or I’d be underneath a glacier.
I can virtually guarantee that the immigrants who will be running what used to be Germany and Austria will not care whether there are any glaciers or orchards in the Alps. They will want warmer weather and no ice. This issue is simply no longer important.
“Old Europe” just needs to turn out the lights and finish dying off. This sort of whining about irrelevance us unbecoming.

LOL. Talk about horsehockey!
So, can we make the same argument about millions of illegals invading the US?
And we're all for evolution, right?
Evolution means progress, right?
Right?
Every avalanche from now on will be blamed on global warming.
So will an absence of avalanches.
Of course they don’t mention that the snows have come early this year. Doesn’t fit the narrative.
Uh...what you said.
limate change poses less of an immediate threat to the planet than previously thought because scientists got their modelling wrong, a new study has found. New research by British scientists reveals the world is being polluted and warming up less quickly than 10-year-old forecasts predicted, giving countries more time to get a grip on their carbon output.
Down shift more, brake less. Losing brakes on mountain roads is double-plus ungood.
The last of my brakes were gone upon reaching ground-level in Austria....I actually drove another four hours onto central-Germany with zero pads.
Had an old '51 Chevy pickup I was driving from Arizona to Idaho. Went through the Hoover Dam, and found out my brakes finally wore in to the shape of the drums. Talk about soiling undies headed toward Lake Meade with no pedal. Pumped them up hard, and fast, then downshifted and used the e-brake as much as possible. Stopped at the bottom for a bit, then drove on through. Had to top off the fluid, and get new tighty-whities in Vegas.
Over and under on how long until the Krauts decide that the Alps should be off limits to hikers and tourists?
