Wanted to avoid running a thread on this, but seeing as how it continues dragging on, guess I'd better. The DOS attacker obviously knows by now that he's hurting us.
Have no idea when he/they started the attack, but we discovered it a few days ago. And John has been fighting it ever since. Says it's like whack-a-mole. Every time John gets him blocked or knocked out, he pops up again with a new modified attack. John thought he had a good solution a couple days ago, and we did enjoy one night and most of the next day with good response time, but then the guy popped up again with a fresh attack.
Don't mind telling you that John is getting very frustrated over this. In fact, the last time we discussed it tonight, he finally told me he could do better if I'd just get off the phone and let him work.
Praying John gets him permanently blocked soon and then we can get back to the more mundane hardware and systems problems that have been plaguing us lately.
And I'm sorry about being sorry. Again. Seems like every month and every week a new problem. But we're stubborn and we're not going to quit. We've managed to solve lots of problems over the last twenty years and we'll solve these too. Eventually. Praying not too many of our participants quit either. We absolutely can't get a long without you.
Hang in there everyone, we'll get this behind us soon.
Also, there are some (not to name names, Boomer) who are claiming we make "millions" off this site. If so, it must be government millions, because we don't see much of it. Nowhere close to millions anyway.
Our estimated ongoing budget of expenses is linked on our donate page. I suppose if you total up the gross income for the last 20 years and assume we have no expenses it could add up to a couple million. But anyone whose been in business for any period of time, knows that's not likely.
There are also posters (Boomer again among others) claiming they could do this on cloud for just a few hundred per year. Well, maybe so. I wish them luck.
Prayers up.
hey caww, please pray i win a lottery. I won’t hold it against you!
And, incredibly, Texans are the largest group of folk moving to Michigan at over 4500 households last year.
Also we get a lot of Texans here as tourists. I never can figure that out.
So there must be something in common...idk.
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack occurs when multiple systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system, usually one or more web servers. Such an attack is often the result of multiple compromised systems (for example, a botnet) flooding the targeted system with traffic.
I think this was just one guy who found a way to seriously hawg our resources, denying them to our valid users (DOS = denial of service). Hoping John has finally found a way to deny him of such underhanded undertakings in the future. Thanks
Hang on there I can’t live without YOU...
Thank you for your perseverance! Thank you for your dedication to the founding principles of this nation. A day without FR is a day without sunshine. May God Bless You!
“Someone should do a correlation study between such DOS attacks and what news events are unfolding...or are about to unfold. If the attacker seems to know before the rest of the world that a major story is about to break (especially one that MSM wont cover but the alternative media will,) that would be rather...interesting.”
BUMP
Which is basically the kind of legalese most TOS of ISPs and forums state, and even if they do yet censor politically incorrect speech, the ambiguity of such terms as "offensive" leaves them much room to do so, and this is one solid reason for staying independent.
Can we all please post on state boards to ask nicely for monyhly donors?
LOVE FR and want to help keep them afloat.
Also any computer engineers here with suggestions.?..
Agree.
Also current stories. Maybe there is something FR is covering and we don’t yet realize its significance.
Looks like our prayers availed much today! We're back up to speed tonight!
Suffice to say Amazon would require a complete rewrite with less security in many respects. The companies that provide a simple virtual server, like Digital Ocean, have those awful terms of service. I had never read them before yesterday. Essentially they have lawyers worried about lawsuits and government actions against them.
Finally there are hosting sites that specialize in free speech. I have not looked into those much but they are (1) generally cesspools that you don't want to be near and (2) don't provide a simple virtual server for John to do his own software.
Prayers that these issues will be resolved, and blessings to all, as we MAGA! Thanks to you, Jim and also to John, for all that you do for us FReepers.
Gizmodo wrote a SJWotard hate piece on Discord in February, so them's bona fides right there.

latency threads always brings out the worshippers of the cloud, and I always find it annoying.
putting your service in the cloud is NOT a pure technology decision, its a business decision. cloud solutions only have one appreciable business effect; they convert capital costs to permanent and I mean endless operating expenses. and once you get in, getting out can be a problem; vendor lock becomes a real concern. whatever it is, it isnt as simple as the cloud fetishists like to think it is.
server hardware is cheap mostly because the mindless are cramming their sh*t in the cloud as fast as they can stuff it. storage is cheap, co-location is cheap. thus, owning is cheap.
not to mention that AWS is run by the same greasy bastard that runs the WaPo, and azure is money in bill gates pocket.
Fr is a pretty big site, but its not that damn big. all I mean by that is that the latency issues are solvable, and it’s support issues are all manageable.
all the people yelling, OMG, you need to put FR in AWS may have read a magazine or spun up a VM in the cloud, but they havent run a business.
Having relocated from California to Texas almost a dozen years ago, I understand people's motivations to move to other states.
The inducements have to be pretty powerful for a family to uproot themselves and leave everything and everyone they know behind. Ususally it's a combination of economics and social conditions that push people to flee the only home they know.
Knowing Texas as I do at this point, it ould be my guess that most of those moving to Michigan from here, are people who relocated here from elsewhere, then found Texas not to their liking. I've seen newbies pull up stakes and leave Texas over and over since I've lived here. Its not for eceryone - especially blue state libs, who find it hard to live in predominantly conservative areas. Some of it's cultural, too.
But the biggest reason is the *#&*@^! heat!
"If I owned Hell and Texas, I would live in Hell and rent out Texas ..."

BlueLancer ... moved to Texas from Michigan in 1975 and love it ...
"If I owned Hell and Texas, I would live in Hell and rent out Texas ..."

Ha! That quote is hilarious, and right on the mark.
When it comes to newbies moving to Texas, it's oftentimes the heat that separates the wheat from the chaff.
