Pres. Trump will not remake the State Department. At best he can force them to shut up for a few years. The Council on Foreign Relations is not going to lose its near-monopoly on State, Defense, and intelligence in one president’s terms. It will take a generation, or some kind of major conflagration.

Past GOP presidents have also sought to cut the State Department down to size, and even current employees have acknowledged bureaucratic problems at Foggy Bottom.

The plant I work at used to have 1600 permanent employees and several thousand temporary employees (special projects and construction).

Now the need to compete has winnowed us down to about 900 permanent employees and several hundred temporary employees.

And the plant actually runs better with less downtime.

When I was working political-military issues in the Pentagon back in the early 90s, and worked with DoS personnel, it was common knowledge and my direct experience that state dept personnel in an embassy somewhere viewed their role as an “honest broker” between the host country and the United States. They never unequivocally advocated, defended or supported the US position.

I've worked with federal employees from several different departments with varying degrees of success but when it came to State I ran into a crowd of elitists beyond belief. These were not really expert in their assigned country (that was Japan at the time), in fact, rather ignorant of its history and social mores. But dear God were they arrogant! These were people convinced that their education and station transcended the country that had nurtured them and that they were imbued with a weird grasp of some internationalist Higher Truth unavailable to those of us who toiled for a living. My hosts, polite to a fault, asked me very discreetly if these people were for real.

That, unfortunately, is the image projected of the United States by people who are paid to do just that and who have a higher loyalty first to their bureaucracy and then to internationalist institutions. There was no loss of perspective on their parts because they never had one in the first place.

This is not to say that they were all deliberately anti-American although it sure looked that way from time to time. They were equally ignorant of their own country. And that's the problem. Firing the lot and putting them to work changing tires at a truck stop wouldn't hurt; replacing them with an identical mob of globalist Ivy League fantasists wouldn't help.
