I was recently reading a biography of a British woman who became a very fine historian. The story was told that at some point in about 1918 the head of a girls’ school made an announcement —
“I have sad news, ladies. You will not be getting married. At least, very few of you will be. The men you were to marry have all died in the trenches. Now you must prepare yourselves to have careers, because there is no other option for you.”

There was a great deal of unreported polygamy from 1918 thru the 1950’s in England. My father worked for the US Gov’t in Europe throughout the 1950’s ... this wasn’t just a problem in England.
