Wherever you choose pledge yourself to actively work against the progressives, reject their demands for more and more government services and hand outs rather than what many leaving high tax paradises seem to do: go elsewhere and start asking for stuff they are used to.
Something is wrong here. Move away from your family after decades? Choice yes but taxes? Stand and fight!

Tennessee, if, and only IF, you’re a Republican. We are in excellent financial condition, have no general state income tax, have amended our constitution to prohibit one, and have reasonable property taxes. My taxes, for example, on a 2 acre semi-rural place in southwest Knox county valued at 430,000 are about $2,200 per year. The legislature and all major state offices are controlled by Republicans. We fully recognize and support the Second Amendment. I was born in Shitago and thank God I’ve lived here for the last 30 years.
Move to Tennessee! The “greenest state in the land of the free” (Davy Crockett). Moved my family from Chicago 3 years ago ... taxes went from +$6,000 to -$300. Better water and nicer neighbors, no income tax, and restrictive gun laws non-existent.
I totally appreciate the sentiment. Chicago dominance of Illinois means that the state will go broke and taxes will skyrocket under dem control. It may get fixed, but this is generational.

I was born and raised in Chicago, not the suburbs. I highly advise you get out while you can. This corruption goes back as far as the first Mayor Daly. I left for Michigan in the 70’s and never looked back. Things are only going to get much much worse.
I jumped across the river two years ago. Closest enough to keep connections to friends and family without giving them any cash.
I agree, living here in Kane county for the last 20 years has been very agreeable but the last three years have been marked by unprecedented fiscal irresponsibility and with painfully few(however valiant I must say) voices of reason to resist it.

You will almost never see it mentioned but you should look into South Dakota. You will learn that there is no State Income Tax and we have a VERY Republican Populace. Winter is bad but work opportunities ABOUND! Small population, VERY FREE!
I’m in Vegas, Nevada. Up until a year or so ago I’d say this was a possibility because of the low taxes. But I can no longer guarantee that long term as we side left.
Give Indianapolis a whirl - north side, Hamilton County - as red as can be, writing this at neighborhood 4th of July celebration. About as mellow as you get, and only Midwest state with a surplus.
