Listening to Fox News, the gun the shooter used has been identified as an SKS with 7.62 X 39 ammo, with a scope, and called a "high powered rifle."
Of course an SKS is not high powered, or particularly accurate....but the ignorance, fear, and bias of the Media--even on Fox--is already coming out--to pound the drum against the 2nd Amendment.
Are you suggesting there is a difference between a sight and a scope? /sarc

.308/.270/30-06 etc are high powered rounds.
I have a .223 pistol and a 30-30 pistol that I load myself. The 30-30 is hot and I use spire point bullets for my TC Contender. I also have a 35 Remington barrel but just use store bought ammo so far. I’m not sure if my .44 magnum with 200 gn HP loaded hot reaches rifle velocity in a 14 inch barrel, but the difference can’t be more than a couple hundred feet per second. A 30-30 rifle with a 150 grn goes maybe 2200-2300 ft per second. My M1 Garand using 30-06 is what I would call high power. My M1A at .308 would also qualify. 762x 39 is very close to the 30-30.
If one of you actually has one of these and is counting on it, do not put on a scope. The scope mounts on a piece that is not barrel or action but a piece that moves every time it is fired. Much, much more accurate without a scope.

Calling it high-powered might be a stretch but it is not grossly inaccurate, either. The rifle was certainly lethal enough if the shooter had been up to the task.
I read he had an M4 Rifle.
I assumed it was a Ruger shooting .556 Ammo. You can’t even Legally use them to hunt Deer in some States if I recall correctly.

A High Powered Assault Rifle is the currently acceptable term for a long gunthat, for the time being, shoots more than one round withut physically reloading. The progress of redefinition indicates that a a HPAR will soon be a long gun that isn’t loaded through the muzzle. A later definition will be expanded to include any firearm over 12 inches long with crossbows starting to appear in the usage.
I think you were lucky drawing a good one. Back in the late '80s a gun shop near me had a sale on Chinese SKSs. They kept a barrel of them out on the floor and let them go for $60 a pop, complete with bayonet. I would look them over carefully and choose the best one I could find. Still, I wound up buying four of them before I got one that could shoot straight. Some of the others were astonishingly inaccurate. The one I kept is a good rifle and very well balanced. I doubt that many people have the time or opportunity to search for a good one as I did, so there are probably a lot of duds out there.

What charge do you like? I can't get good groups really, and it burns a lot of powder out the barrel. I just want a .44 barrel I think.

I doubt very seriously it was a SKS. I don’t know where you saw/heard that, but he would have to have been reloading with stripper clips if he was using a SKS
