If there were ever a time to increase the gas tax it would be NOW! A tax bill is in the works. The Democrats want it "paid for." Oil price is way down and not likelihood of an increase soon. High tech improvements to oil discovery and production have drastically reduced oil prices.
I am happy to pay more for a gas tax that would improve road and bridge infrastructure. PA increased the gas tax and nobody fussed much. A federal gas tax hike is long overdue and Democrats would vote for it!
We do not have a lack of taxes problem, we have serious spending problem. The roads are crap not for lack of taxes collected, but for lack of maintenance preformed.
Since the amount of money spent on the roads annually is less than the amount collected from gas taxes currently, how will raising taxes fix roads?
What will fix roads is a audit with criminal prosecution for misappropriation of funds. Not more funds to line pockets with.
Amen.
68.7 cents per gallon is literally “highway robbery”.
If the Demorats would be for it how in the hell can it be good for this country ??
I was taught in grade school that government equals force, that taxes go into a holding pen to be fed to a large hole in the ground after the politicians take their cut. I believe the last audit showed a dollar goes to DC and 1/3 stays as the other 2/3's goes to local pols and they go into debt for whatever the project was to begin with.
Many don't remember we financed the Mexican wall twice in the past but today, we have no wall and the money is gone. Raising the gas tax has NEVER gone to fixing the roads. We recently got rid of a tax on phones that was from the Spanish/American war and paid all the way to the Bush Administration.
The way this was done in the past was to have a bond election where people actually voted on roads and bridges they wanted and the money could only go towards the project, and when the road was finished, the bonds could be paid off.
A gas tax for a Democrat was just an excuse to make gas harder to buy to "save the planet". People still need to get from A to B, so the gas is still bought, just at a higher price, wasting money and the planet still gets the same amount of "poisons" to breathe.
Why not raise Social Security taxes instead? How about a Medicare tax raise?....Why gas? Social Security and Medicare are both going broke every few years and they never pay for themselves. Medicare is about $800 billion to a $trillion of our debt ever year. We can't pay for medical for just the people over 65 and yet now we are trying to pay for everyone's healthcare. We pay Social Security for 40 years and draw it all out in a couple of years, only to live for another 30 years. Socialism doesn't work,....EVER! Look at Venezuela today.
Back in grade school, when I was growing up, my Social Studies teacher taught us about the Soviet Union, Cuba, East Germany, Viet Nam, and China. When you find out Russia didn't even have enough toilet paper, an American 13 year old dumps on socialism right quick. Also, we saw Corvettes and Camero's compared to that 2cycle thing the Ruskies were driving. I knew Venezuela was finished when they said they ran out of toilet paper.
Any tax is soon thrown into a huge pot and the original use of the money is quickly forgotten. Your gas tax will eventually pay for abortions or fuel for Air Force One to go golfing somewhere at the same time there are multi-million dollar congressional hearings to figure out why our roads are still bad.
If you don't send them any money, they can't waste it. That's the principle a conservative should operate on. As far as bullets and tanks, we always seem to have the money somewhere when they cut food stamps and Medicaid. Of course, they always seem to have money for a raise for congress even if there is no inflation. Notice the healthcare congress gets is NEVER the healthcare we are offered.
No, FR will not support a gas tax, ever! Whatever project you have planned for the money will never get done and the tax will never expire.
No.
“PA increased the gas tax and nobody fussed much”
I live on the PA-NJ border. Gas in NJ is roughly 30 to 40 cents cheaper than in PA. That is in spite of a recent gas tax increase in NJ. I have not bought gas in PA in years.
Did I stumble in to the Democratic Underground? You need to ban yourself.
Yeah, fool. PA upped the gas tax and used it to up the State Police pay. The last gas tax went to Mass Transportation, The one before that went to the turnpike. On and on and on. Same thing with a Federal raise. No infrastructure improvements will come from politicians, it is for Unions which contribute to politicians. Period.
I 've also noticed the same at the pumps for awhile now.
Apparently the laws of "supply & demand" have disengaged in favor of GREED.
Easy. Reduce the size, scope, power, and cost of government. Let the Constitution be your guide.
You must be one of them thar purists! Can't have any of that ...
Giving politicians more money is a fools errand.
Who needs a gas tax when Obama “invested” 8 trillion dollars rebuilding our “crumbling roads, bridges, and infrastructure.”
More money out of our pockets into the treasury, where it can be wasted or spent on things we don’t get to voice an opinion upon? No thanks!
and the money DID NOT go to the road. PA has some of the highest gas and other road related taxes - and the worst roads - as do other dem-run states, like California.
One of my sons is a long-hauler- back and forth, up and down the country.
Pub-run states - good roads.
Higher taxes isn't the fix. what they DO with the taxes is.
MoonBeam in Calif just proposed a massive hike in gas taxes to - ahem - fix their crumbling roads, dams and bridges. Already, before it's enacted, the politicians have put in proposals having nothing to do with fixing anything, for big chunks of the money.
YOU want to give them more money - have at it. (Sure don't sound like a Conservative).
BTY, finnsheep - you post your 'vanity' and then disappear - no 'conversation'...you trolling?
“Oddly, the price at the pumps keeps going UP.”
Especially in California where the state raised the gas tax starting at .12/gal and set it to rise withe the price of gas.
Good for you! But don’t wait for the new gas tax. Just write a check for your estimated share to the Treasury every time you fill up. That way you can settle your conscience without forcing everyone else to help you increase the revenue to and the size of government.
I live in PA near the NJ border. There is massive interstate reconstruction going on right now. I-84 is being ripped up and replaced along with many of the I-84 bridges. Do I think this would have happened without the increased PA gas tax? No. Do I have a big problem with paying for our State Police? No.
Trump is readying a massive tax reduction bill. There will be some increases in some places to offset some of it or the national debt will increase. Here’s a good place for the offset.
