Remington Introduces New Firearm, Not A Pistol, Rifle, or Shotgun
ammoland ^ | 4 May, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

The BATFE ruling that firearms that are more than 26 inches in length, but are not manufactured to be fired from the shoulder, are neither pistols or shotguns or rifles, but merely “firearms” has resulted in a new type of defensive firearm.

The Remington Tac 14 is now available and has suggested retail price of $443.05. Store prices will likely be in the $400 range.

These type of firearms have been produced by small manufacturers for years. Two years ago, I predicted that the major manufacturers would come on board, if the small manufacturers proved popular.

At that time, I had not considered a Donald Trump Presidency. From the article two years ago:

The usual sequence is that when small manufacturers find a profitable market, large manufactures start production of their own models to take advantage of it. I will be watching to see if Mossberg or other large firms start offering pistol grip 12 gauge firearms of similar configurations.

It is an interesting time, and I believe the end result will be reform of federal gun laws, to something far more rational and less burdensome than now exists.

The Trump Presidency has created a more firearms friendly legal environment. Both Mossberg and Remington have come out with this type of legal firearm.  These firearm models make a mockery of the entire silly NFA regulatory scheme. From the previous article:

These short guns firing shotgun shells have obvious self defense applications.  There is no reason why these guns should be treated any different than ordinary pistols.   Functionally, they are either large pistols or small shotguns.   Both shotguns and pistols are constitutionally protected by the Heller and McDonald decisions.   There is no valid reason for treating these firearms any differently than other shotguns or pistols.

It’s not a shotgun.

Do you routinely fire a pump shotgun one-handed? I’ve used this grip when it initially came out (didn’t have the sling swivel). Shot slugs with it, no malfunctions. If you want to suck up the recoil one handed go ahead. I usually shoot things that need shooting at least twice so I’ll continue to use both hands.

I told FrogDad that I wanted a shorter shotgun for in the house than my Remington 870. He bought me a Taurus Judge handgun. .45 long colt or .410 shells. I love it!

Ditto. I’ll take my 870 youth for home defense any day. Only 40” long (21” barrel) & 20 Gauge.

I can literally turn around in a hallway with it deployed.

I wonder if a 20 gauge might me more functional than a 12 gauge

I certainly wouldn't want to fire a 12 ga. with a pistol grip.........

Click on “THESE” in my post. They are 12 gauge mini shells by Aguila. Some pumps can’t handle them without jamming. Looks like the Mossberg 500 (and probably others) need an adapter to handle them, but lighter recoil and higher mag capacity are big pluses.

"Interesting. The one pictured in the article, if it were fitted with a 10rd magazine, would be a great home defense item and I would be interested."

For home defense, I would prefer the Kel-Tec bullpup with 1.5" home defense shells. The Kel-Tec dual magazine allows 14 3" shells. The shorties result in much lower felt recoil and 28 possible shots. According to some items I've read, the KT pump action will cycle the short shells sufficiently reliably.

The ATF classes it with how the receiver was made. Sawing the butt off a shotgun or rifle can cause legal issues if it falls below minimum length for those platforms. But if it was never in that platform, it won’t.

I wasn’t talking about the Remington item, I was responding to the poster that wrote “I have a pistol grip Mossberg 12 gauge. It kicks like a mule. But with a 16” barrel, it can be carried in my truck without a cc permit.” I think Mossberg advertises their “pistol grip” as a shotgun.

I see. Then, yeah, the minimum OAL applies.

And possibly another big scar on your forehead that won’t go away for years.

Interesting. The one pictured in the article, if it were fitted with a 10rd magazine, would be a great home defense item and I would be interested.

10 round mag, huh? At self defense range, and situation, I think you'd have trouble explaining why you filled the bad guy with 10 rounds of double buck. Unless he was part of the Zombie apocalypse. ;)

Yep, but rest assured, NFA Tech branch will issue a letter saying that it is indeed an SBS, not a firearm....

Let's just be preemptive and shoot some letters off to them asking for a clarification.....what could go wrong? I'll see what the fellas over on Arfcom think..... :)

That is not a ‘real thing’.

The Circuit Judge has no lever. It is built on a double action revolver frame.

Someone has been playing with photoshop.

Sorry, I stand corrected. They introduced that in 2011. Never saw one. I read that they did it to get around some eurpoean laws.

Other than that, it is a silly idea.

(I have a regular circuit judge and like it.)
