I thought bringing up his past was quite wrong as it had nothing to do with the incident in question.

I thought Dr. Dao behaved shamefully and that he threw a tantrum like a child. He should have had more dignity than he displayed.

Initially I was led to believe that United had the legal right to deplane him, but someone pointed out that the contract only stipulates this for an "overbooked" condition, and not because they wanted to bump him for airline employees who aren't ticket holders.

It is a legal technicality, but I recognize the law runs on those nowadays.

I think United's settlement has more to do with the bad publicity they received than it does with any legal liability.

I detest everything about this whole sorry mess. I detest that they tried to evict a legitimate passenger, I detest the fact he screamed like a little girl and threw a tantrum, I detest that he immediately screamed "racism" and I detest that United felt they had to settle because of "trial on the public airwaves."

This whole thing is a sorry representation of modern life. Why do we no longer have people with common sense and dignity?

Dao got minimal $ for being dragged. Most of the money was for serious injuries he suffered when United unnecessarily placed him at risk. Believe it or not, it’s possible to deplane a passenger without putting him/her in the hospital. Dao still needs reconstructive surgery. Most passengers would consider that level of personal injury too high a price to pay for an eventual settlement.

G-d bless Dr. Dao. That could have been any one of us on that plane. Hopefully airlines will start treating paying customers with more respect.

No it couldn't have been. Under the circumstances, had they told me that I was randomly selected from the passengers and that they would like me to leave, I would have done so with decorum.

I would not make a fool of myself in front of the other passengers, and I would certainly not actively resist the security officers (I wouldn't let it get to the point where they had to call security) sent to remove me from the plane.

#4 No I do not believe so. They cooked it up and are serving it for dinner in 1st class.

Lol, a long time ago I lived with some friends, a married couple. The wife had bought a couple of rabbits for pets, and in a short period of time they had like a hundred rabbits. She went out of town one weekend, and the husband and I killed most of them, cleaned and filled up the freezer with the meat, and had the fur for sell. She was a little upset but not so much that she didn’t cook and eat the meat.

This bunny was HUGE and valuable, so she needs some answers.

This can’t be true. The “legal experts” on here vowed that United’s lawyers would make mincemeat of him in court. And it was implied that he would end up paying United money.

My understanding is that he got his injuries from when his face hit an armrest as they were dragging him out of his seat.

In other words a consequence of his resisting their efforts to remove him.

Look, once they've sent two big guys with clubs or tasers to remove you, you are going to get removed, and you have to be some kind of moron to think it is not going to turn out badly for you if you resist.

Once the big guys showed up he should have said "Okay, Okay! I'm leaving. "

Trying to stay in the chair when it is clear they have the muscle to remove you is just stupid.

This may not be about legality. This may be about it's cheaper for their bottom line to get this off the news.

I've heard this has cost them over 100 million in stock value. A 10 or so million dollar settlement would be cheaper than keeping this thing in the news.

He will not talk.

His family will not talk.

His friends won’t talk.

Dao was fine until they brutally slammed his head into the armrest.

His Lawyer got enough that he won’t have to worry about paying the bills for a long time.

The video won't play. It says it's being pulled due to a copyright claim by "Joya Griffin Cummings."

My recollection of the video is that when they finally pulled him out of his seat, he fell onto the arm rest. I do not think the police officers "slammed his head into the armrest", I think he fell into it after they pulled him from his seat.

This is the sort of thing you can expect to happen if you actively resist security personnel on an airplane. This is why it is a bad idea to do it.

What is stupid is putting a non-threatening, legally-boarded passenger in the hospital. Look at how quickly United settled this lawsuit. They knew they were at fault—and have publicly said so multiple times.

I still have my teeth and no concussion. How about you?

There is a time to fight and a time not to fight, and unless some dire stake is on the line, it is not worth getting badly hurt for something stupid like an airline seat, especially when you cannot get what you want no matter how it works out.

Beat the guards and they will send more. The one thing you will not do at that point is be left alone.

“This is the sort of thing you can expect to happen if you actively resist security personnel on an airplane.”

No this is the sort of thing you can expect to happen in a Police State when people get their ass kicked by the police for doing nothing wrong and acting in a legal manner.

Many people in this thread and on FR have jumped to immediately trash the doctor and defend United. Why?

Dunno. I've seen a lot of kneejerks siding with Dao against the airplane as well. What I find interesting is how people feel they are compelled to choose sides. I don't agree with Dao, the security personnel or the airline in this case.

Your recollection is wrong. United has admitted that excessive force was used. They’ve said nothing like this will ever happen again. Even their own flight attendants who watched the video blamed the thugs for slamming Dao’s face into the armrest. They said the thugs should have raised the armrest to its upright position. What more do you want—a reinactment complete with a concussion?
