U.S. SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA WON’T BE LIFTED UNTIL CRIMEA IS RETURNED TO UKRAINE: REX TILLERSON

The United States will not lift sanctions on Russia until President Vladimir Putin hands Crimea back to Ukraine, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said late Sunday.

During a phone call with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Tillerson said the sanctions—which have crippled Russia’s economy and pushed down the value of the ruble—will “ remain in place until Russia returns control of the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine.”

He also said that Moscow must honor the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine that was outlined in the Minsk agreements, according to a State Department official.

Very, very foolish of Putin. Islam, when it is ready, will eat him alive.

I hope that Putin notices this before it is too late.

That’s a good way to put it because that is what they are doing.

“Who’d have thought we’d have Freepers praising putin and upset with Trump for his pro-American policies.”

Surely not all disagreement constitutes “being upset”?

I think it would be wise for the USA to look like a better friend to Putin than getting even deeper with Islam than he is already.

As much as I hated the narrative that Putin installed Trump, I have always disliked KGB Putin and saw his moves in Ukraine and Crimea nothing more than a march into Poland. It’s the domino effect all over again. If we don’t stop him, after the Ukraine it will be Lithuania, then Poland.

Great post. Putin of course always digs up the “right wing scare”, like a good little communist, by falsely claiming that the Ukraine is in the hands of neo-Nazis.

Putin looks yet like a pride and power driven man.

A dalliance on his part with Islam is like letting an alcoholic into a wine cellar. It supersedes other matters in degree of danger.

Almost any compromise is preferable to encouraging that to play out further.

Always disliked Putin and what Russia has become. Some see him as some defender of Christendom. That is all fake. He is KGB as much as Merkel is Stasi. He was smart to bring the Orthodox Church on side. Now he has the Church backing him. He has nostalgia for what Russia was in the 1980s and wants the evil empire reborn. One thing I give him is he is a political genius and makes Western leaders look like pikers.

It rather be part of the kleptocratic regime of Russia?

To be honest I find Russia history confusing. As far as can tell their was the Moscow state and then Novgorod. Once Novgorod was soundly defeated Russia pretty much ran the gamut of what is now the Ukraine. There was no Ukraine in the early Russian empire, at least not as its own state. At some point I imagine it gained its own character. My point is I guess, is that being Ukrainian doesn’t seem to make one racially different from Russians. It was all the same peoples.

If a political genius, Putin would be an evil one, and one heading for a fall (the only question being whether or not he brings all Russia, and maybe the world, along with it in a Hitleresque crash).

Maybe the US sanctions will remind him that he can’t get away with absolutely everything, but on the other hand it might do about as much good as the Cuban sanctions did.

If Trump really wants to show good will, he’d remind Putin of what kind of fire he is playing around with, when he plays around with Islam. But maybe Trump won’t have to do it. Maybe God will do it.

Also, perhaps not specific to your post but the thread in general, the Moscow Times reports

“Tajik Police Say They’ve Found ‘No Trace’ of St. Petersburg Bomb Suspect”
https://themoscowtimes.com/news/tajik-police-say-theyre-found-no-trace-of-st-petersburg-bomb-suspect-57815

Moscow Times is the Russian press, albeit, English languaged, so this isn’t Voice of America, Radio Free Europe or someone saying this. Rather strange.

Wrong wrong wrong. Why does Trump/his administration get it wrong? Siding with the neo nazis is wrong wrong wrong.

Definitely agree he is an evil genius. He has the love of the Russian people, but none of that can make up for the fact Russia is a failed state. I don’t think that fact bothers him any. But for us it is a good thing, I think. Demographically and economically the country is collapsing. Which makes it less of a worry going forward for the US.

I think the biggest danger here is the dalliance with Islam. Worse than a Putin Russia would be a Russia swallowed up by Islam.

“One has to ask - why exactly is Crimea a US priority now? What’s really behind it?”

Yes, that’s the question! Everyone here (well mostly everyone) wants to start passing judgement based on essentially no information other than Tillerson’s comments. Time will tell us what the underlying reasons are here, and they may have nothing directly to do with Crimea. In fact, Crimea could simply be a pretext for keeping on the sanctions, when there are other reasons for so doing that we don’t want to publicly advance at this moment in time.

Sanctions started under Obama, Trump said he’d look at lifting the sanctions. Your assertion seems non-applicable. It has been an issue all along.

Its been an issue since the 2013 Maidan Revolution (or Clinton/Obama Ukraine Coup) depending on your point of view.

My point is - in all our history until then, the USA never questioned Crimea's status as Russian, or something other.

How much money do you think we are already spending to “ arm the Ukrainians’ ? And how many of those weapons are killing... Ukrainians?

There’s a video on You Tube of Crimeans celebrating their independence day and singing the Russian national anthem, fireworks going off, the Crimeans going wild with joy that they’ve rejoined Russia.
