Schumer: Democrats will filibuster Gorsuch nomination
Washington Post ^ | March 23 | Ed O'Keefe, Robert Barnes and Ann E. Marimow

Posted on 03/23/2017 8:11:43 AM PDT by PghBaldy

As the Senate Judiciary Committee was hearing from witnesses for and against Judge Neil Gorsuch, his Supreme Court nomination was delivered a critical blow: Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he would join with other Democrats in filibustering Gorsuch — a move that would require at least 60 senators to vote to end debate on the nomination.

“Stupid Dems. After Gorsuch is confirmed by 52 GOP votes, the next selection, after Ginsburg leaves, may be far more conservative than Gorsuch and the Dems won’t be able to stop him/her since the precedent for the nuclar option has been set.”

And there are probably two more “Just Us’es” (Kennedy and Breyer) that will be in need of replacement before Trump leaves office. If the Senate “cooperates,” Trump will leave us a RAT-proof SCOTUS for as long as thirty years!

I suspect that doing nothing and then just taking what you know is coming is not in accordance with founding principles either. I do not see any nobility in doing nothing and letting democrats screw republicans on nuking the filibuster first. The filibuster is just a Senate rule that can be changed at any time. The 17th amendment is what I think really screwed the Senate up. Repealing it would do much for restoring the Senate and our government to what it should be.

If he lets a filibuster kill the nomination he will be finished as leader.

That might be a price worth considering!

I just wonder why schumer would say that knowing about the nuclear option.

His hands are tied. He can't go back to his batsh** crazy base with anything less and hope to survive that.

If they do it, then all bets are off for the two liberal judges that are about to retire while Trump is in office.
If the Dems want to play that way, replace the liberal judges with conservative ones and call it done.

And use the nuke option then, too.

I hope the Repubs in the Senate have the balls to do this. It's a simple easy solution but Repubs are notoriously cowardly weenies. Especially McVain, Lindy Graham & Susan Collins.

You are joking, of course. We already know the answer to that question.

Come on folks, Gorsuch will be confirmed. I’m no fan of McConnell, but he will invoke the nuclear option if he has to, otherwise no conservative will ever be confirmed to the SC. Schemer has to do this because the lib base is crazy mad. My guess is that 8 Dems from red states invoke cloture nd this becomes a non-issue. This isn’t a fight that works to their benefit.

I think you are right -- IF McConnell declares that he will invoke the Reid Option, I believe enough Democrats will vote to invoke cloture and thus preserve their options against future Supreme Court nominees.

Going all-in against Gorsuch is NOT in the Democrats' best interests. Delaying Gorsuch's confirmation until after the April appeals are heard IS in the Democrats' best interests. Their strategy is to "Throw Sand in the Gears of Everything."

Re: Pool

Going out on a limb. This is so danged important, not even McConnell will cave. McCain, maybe. Trump will have to use every leadership tool in the the arsenal, but I have more faith in him than anybody.

Dems (like Tester from my state, Montana), beware. This might be the issue that sinks you. We care about this SCOTUS issue than anything else because all else of importance (immigration, taxes, admin state, healthcare) hinge on SCOTUS.

GOP. Waver at your peril.

Agreed. And call it the Harry Reid nuclear option.

If McConnell refuses to go nuclear, Cruz or some GOP Senator should openly call for the GOP Senate caucus to reconsider who its leader should be.

Please do! I REALLY hope they filibuster. For one thing it forces Republicans to back Trump and two it forces them to fight back. The worst thing that can happen is the “deal” they’ve been suggesting. Let them filibuster. Mitch is an idiot!

There is nothing constitutional about a filabuster. It was a creation of the Slaver representative John C. Calhoun to prevent any laws affecting slavery. It is and has always been despicable.

Good. Best to use the nuclear option now and have the use of it settled for future Supreme Court nominees so those won’t be compromised on.
