I think the military came up with this. They had an array of microphones facing different direction placed on top of their vehicle. When a shot went off in hearing distance a computer measured the time it took for the song to reach all the microphones which would pass that data to the software and it would spit out the range and direction the shot originated.

You want a specific example of a modern, large caliber pistol that fires a subsonic round? OK, here it is: most 9mm pistols fire a 115 grain or 124 grain bullet. However, there are PLENTY of 147 grain bullets loaded into 9mm ammunition, and many of those loaded are sub-sonic. Problem solved.

Every handgun I own has iron sights with the exception of one which has a red dot optical. None of them would be functional with an oil filter on the end of the barrel...........
