Governor vetoes bills trying to loosen gun laws

PIERRE | South Dakota's Republican governor on Friday vetoed a pair of bills that would have loosened restrictions on carrying concealed guns in the conservative state.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard had warned he would veto the bills — one to let people carry concealed handguns without a permit, the other to allow concealed weapons in the Capitol building. Daugaard has said the state's current gun laws are reasonable.

"As a longtime member of the NRA, I support the right to bear arms," Daugaard said in his veto letter for the permitless carry bill. "It is paramount that our state protect the rights of our citizens while at the same time protecting the lives of our citizens. I believe our current laws appropriately protect both interests, and I ask that you sustain my veto."

Supporters of both bills plan to attempt overrides — and if that's not successful, to try again next year. Neither bill got the two-thirds support that suggests an override would succeed. Both passed one chamber only narrowly.

He should be over-ridden and then ousted. His fake NRA credentials are just a RINO smokescreen for a gun-grabbing a-hole-in-waiting.

Newsflash RINO, no law is going to stop a person hell bent going into Government offices and killing at will. But I guarantee if someone is carrying legally and someone attempts this, the damage will be minimal. Liberalism is a mental disorder

" one to let people carry concealed handguns without a permit, the other to allow concealed weapons in the Capitol building."

I am opposed to the first. I'm conflicted about CCW in government offices.

There are alot of liberals that belong to the NRA. Primarily to develop antigun strategies against gun rights efforts that the NRA informs members about.
Supporting the right to keep and bear arms? Not so much.

Why are our “leaders” such confused bums? What a pathetic state of affairs. Take away their armed guards. They are such hypocrites.

A governor who espouses the NRA can be expected to favor “Reasonable Gun Laws.” which infringe on the right to keep and bear. Personally, I think a reasonable gun law would require firearms training in all schools, public and private, grades K through 12 and require all adults to be armed at any time they leave their domicile.

"A well regulated militia; being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

You swore to protect and defend that principle against all enemies foreign and domestic. The South Dakota governor has made of himself a domestic enemy.

Please clarify what you meant by "I am opposed to the first."

I don't see anything about "permits" in the Constitution.

An armed society is a polite and respectful society. Where else should one expecdt ‘respect and politeness’ but in a government office from a bureaucrat?

As long as 30 round rifle and pistol mags are allowed, I can pretty much live with the rest. Permitless carry is cool, though. Too bad for south Dakota

I am of the opinion that any public place (unrestricted access to anyone) should allow CCW. If it is not a public place, such as a jail or a court house, then security needs to be provided as in screening for weapons and a means of securing weapons prior to screening (lockers).

If someone, either the state or agents of the state or a private property owner decides to exercise their rights as the owner of that property, by denying someone their right to self defense, then the property owner automatically assumes the responsibility for security. I know that is not the current law but that is how it should be.

Don’t care for the Constitution’s Bill of Rights as written? or trust your fellow citizens?

Being a vet doesn’t give anyone any extra credit on political views;look at the vet from Arizona.

I worked with an Army vet strongly opposed to private guns except for licensed hunting. And a Marine vet of similar views.

SOME vets think they are somehow better than other citizens, just as do SOME police.
