It didn’t take long for MSNBC and Rachel Maddow to go from hero to goat last night. Now some want to move them from goat to … victim? After spending all day hyping an exclusive on Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns but delivering a prime-time “total nothingburger,” as Chris Cillizza put it at the Washington Post, some are speculating that Trump set up Maddow by leaking the tax returns himself:

While that is true, the IRS stamps all the documents received and these copies do not contain their stamp.

This tax return copy was never filed with a state or federal tax agency.
Copies of tax returns are required as part of the casino license application process. These files do not have the security checks and balances that the tax agencies have in place.
A copy of Trump’s 2005 tax return would have been given to the Ed Rendell run Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The Board was all Rendell cronies as he started it. A copy of Trumps’s tax return could be made from the file and no one would know it.

As attorney general of PA he started the investigation of Paterno and Penn State football. As Gov. he was on the Board of Directors of Penn State and became judge & jury...

Deja Vu.
When Dan Rather set up that live interview on his CBS Evening News broadcast of VP GHW Bush in an attempt to ambush him early in the 1988 campaign, Bush turned the tables on Dannie Boy and made the anchor look stoopid. Their explanation was that BUSH AMBUSHED RATHER with the help of a few staffers that set Dannie Boy up. Yes, they really wanted us all to believe that.
As others have pointed out:
“Client Copy” stamps are readily available. (MAYBE THEY GOT ONE FROM STAPLES, WHICH WOULD IMPLICATE ROMNEY’S INVOLVEMENT!)
It’s interesting that all of a sudden they are suspicious of the source of this leak, who it may have been and what his/her motive was in leaking. Uh, that is the question to be asked in ANY leak. Who leaked Flynn’s conversation, and what was that leaker’s motive? Who leaked the electronic surveillance stories of Trump, and why? (A: To advance the Russian hacking narrative.)
