Asplundh Tree Execs Charged With Running Undocumented Workers Scheme

Willow Grove-based Asplundh Tree Expert Co. is huge, privately owned corporation with more than 36,000 employees and estimated annual sales of $3.5 billion, according to Forbes, which counts it as one of America’s largest private companies. But now, Asplundh finds itself the recipient of some very unwelcome attention thanks to charges just filed in federal court.

An Asplundh vice president, Larry Gauger, 45, of Wayne, has been charged with visa fraud and conspiracy relating to his work at the company. Two other Asplundh managers have been charged as well, according to the Department of Justice, but their names have yet to be released.

According to a charging document filed in federal court in Philadelphia on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security audited Asplundh’s employment records and determined that some of its workers were ineligible to work in the United States. The employees were fired.

Homeland Security determined that approximately 100 of those employees had been working in a division managed by Gauger. The feds allege that Gauger instructed his team’s supervisors and foremen to accept working credentials that they knew to be fraudulent and illegally obtained.

Gauger is also accused of directing his managers to rehire under false identification employees who had been fired as a result of the Homeland Security audit. Investigators point to two specific instances involving undocumented immigrants who presented bogus Social Security cards. The charges allege that Gauger knew that the Social Security cards were “forged, counterfeited, altered, falsely made, or otherwise procured by fraud.

“”””Offer more money, you get what you pay for. Or go out of business.””””

I take it you have no experience hiring people for outside work.

These practices are rampant. The O/T trick I’m familiar with was when one person worked for one dba for hours 1-8 with credentials A, then he would work any subsequent hours for same owner/different dba with credentials B. Quite a devil’s bargain. If you’ve ever noticed the concrete layouts on the X games and street league broadcast, you’ll know who I’m talking about. Those guys are great concrete finishers, though ...

Asplundh employees should go to jail for crimes against nature– they’re absolute careless butchers who don’t give a fnck what homeowners think or what damage they do...

I am surprised. If the Asplundh family is involved personally, I would be shocked. They are quite conservative. Sounds like a rogue VP and some managers doing their own thing. My father in law was a VP in Iowa for many years. He has since passed on. He would be rolling over in his grave. Of course, that’s been years ago.....so who knows anymore. It’s probably not the company it used to be.

So you don’t hire people for outside work. I understand why you avoided the question.

Some states are reinstituting the welfare work requirements for able-bodied. But a lot aren’t, even though official employment numbers are excellent. Who wants to work when they can get half as much for doing nothing (above the table anyway)?
Skilled construction workers will stay scarce though.
Any luck inquiring at high/vocational schools for help?

You’re the one complaining you can’t find anyone. So you offering to pay minimum wage? LOL. What a joke. I wouldn’t hire you to change light bulb. I really don’t think you have a business.

Crimes against nature? Lol. Their job is to clear utility lines, not trim your tree to make it look purty. If you want that, hire someone to trim your tree yourself so it’s not interfering with a utility line. Or don’t plant a tree near a line in the first place.

Last fall I talked to a foreman of a company who does excavating. They have 500 employees and are a union shop.
They try job fairs, offer free training, anything they can. Too many people just don’t want to leave the couch.
Many people can’t pass a drug test, can’t get a drivers license etc.

Insults are the sign of a weak mind.

I do mostly contracting on government projects. Most have Davis Bacon requirements. The LOWEST I can pay a laborer is 49 bucks an hour.

Ha ha ha. The truth comes out. The lowest you can pay is $49.00/hr and you can't find anyone? Yo expect anyone to believe that? What BS artist you are. Go f-ing away. What joke you are.

Demand is going to be higher than supply for a good while- 10 years of labor supply has been destroyed by the Democrats.
Say, is there a liberal arts college nearby? Might be some healthy arts majors graduates looking to ‘live like the people’- or just pay their bills.
