Years ago I was a Cataloger at a library. Specifically, it was a University Library and the university specialized in training people to be elementary school teachers. Interesting environment.

I cataloged a lot of academic material for college work up to and including the doctoral level. I also cataloged a lot of children's books, because we had an extensive collection of material that would be useful in elementary classrooms.

I once got a book about an African prince from Mali. In the year 1400 or so, he took a great armada across the Atlantic. Well over 1000 ships from Africa sailed across the great ocean — 92 years before Columbus. This great prince discovered America and taught many valuable skills to the Pre-Colombian Indians of Central America. Years later the prince sailed his armada back to Africa.

The book was intended as Non-Fiction. I went to my supervisor and said that I could catalog it as a folk-tale (fiction) but that it was not an accurate piece of historical non-fiction.

She told me to catalog as Non-Fiction. Pure and simple.

So I went home and started looking into grad school and that is why I now work in IT.
