iPhone Handgun Has Police on Alert, Set to Hit US Market
The Australian ^ | January 11, 2017 | Bruno Waterfield

European police forces have been placed on alert for illegal imports of the “iPhone gun”, a 9mm double-barrelled pistol disguised as a smartphone.

The handgun, which folds up so that it resembles an iPhone, will go on sale in America within weeks. With one click it unfolds to become a deadly two-shot pistol, with laser sights.

An alert sent to Belgian police at the weekend said that although no copies had yet been found, the weapons were expected to turn up on European streets soon.

“To the eye, nothing can distinguish it from a mobile telephone,” said the Belgian police alert, reported by Derniere Heure newspaper. “Most people possess a smartphone, meaning that it can pass completely overlooked.”

The prospect of illegal sales of the gun is a nightmare for European police and security forces already struggling to cope with terror threats. The gun sells for 325 pounds ($540), much less than an iPhone 7, which costs almost 600 pounds.

Ideal Conceal, the Minnesota manufacturer, has already taken 12,000 orders. “In today’s day and age, carrying a concealed pistol has become a necessity,” said the online sales pitch.

“Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.”

Kirk Kjellberg, the company’s chief executive, said that the idea came to him after a child in a restaurant saw his own gun, which was not concealed, and became frightened.

“There are some people that would take serious issue in the workplace or somewhere else to see a gun on you, and I think it gives people the opportunity to avoid that conversation,” he said last year.

The weapon, which is not classed as a “disguised weapon” in the US and is therefore legal, is designed to be carried in a purse, back pocket or worn in a phone holder on a belt, to be quickly opened and instantly ready to fire with a hammerless action.

Even in .380, I wouldn't shoot that thing -- except by using someone else's hand -- and at a safe distance.

~~~~~~~~~
One of the harshest shooting handguns I've ever fired was my HK4, with the .380 barrel installed -- until I spent a lot of work removing all traces of mold flash and all other "sharp" surfaces from its plastic uni-grip. It was so bad that I -- an experienced shooter of larger calibers -- would not shoot it without my Nomex gloves -- until it was "tamed".
Even so, the HK4 grip was designed to fit the human hand -- and this piece of junk is definitely not so designed.
And, the HK-4 is a "full-sized" .380 -- not a "mousegun" like some Kahrs, Rugers and Seecamps...
My prediction is that someone might get off one shot with this thing, but would suffer so much hand trauma that they would either drop it or recoil in pain -- and never fire the second barrel. Especially so, if the upper barrel is the first to fire...
Euros and Aussies call .380ACP "9mm Kurtz" or "9mm short". The bullet is the exact same diameter as 9mm Parabellum (0.354" diameter) but the cartridge case is shorter.
This panic is to be expected from hoplophobes.
It’s not an AOW because it has a pistol grip. There was a pen gun that had a tiny “pistol grip” that folded out (more like a paper clip!) and it avoided the AOW designation the same way.
Compare the contoured HK4 grip...
...with the angular, sharp-edged monstrosity pictured above...
...and, I'll bet the HK4 weighs twice what that "phone-gun" weighs...
