iPhone Handgun Has Police on Alert, Set to Hit US Market
The Australian ^ | January 11, 2017 | Bruno Waterfield

European police forces have been placed on alert for illegal imports of the “iPhone gun”, a 9mm double-barrelled pistol disguised as a smartphone.

The handgun, which folds up so that it resembles an iPhone, will go on sale in America within weeks. With one click it unfolds to become a deadly two-shot pistol, with laser sights.

An alert sent to Belgian police at the weekend said that although no copies had yet been found, the weapons were expected to turn up on European streets soon.

“To the eye, nothing can distinguish it from a mobile telephone,” said the Belgian police alert, reported by Derniere Heure newspaper. “Most people possess a smartphone, meaning that it can pass completely overlooked.”

The prospect of illegal sales of the gun is a nightmare for European police and security forces already struggling to cope with terror threats. The gun sells for 325 pounds ($540), much less than an iPhone 7, which costs almost 600 pounds.

Ideal Conceal, the Minnesota manufacturer, has already taken 12,000 orders. “In today’s day and age, carrying a concealed pistol has become a necessity,” said the online sales pitch.

“Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.”

Kirk Kjellberg, the company’s chief executive, said that the idea came to him after a child in a restaurant saw his own gun, which was not concealed, and became frightened.

“There are some people that would take serious issue in the workplace or somewhere else to see a gun on you, and I think it gives people the opportunity to avoid that conversation,” he said last year.

The weapon, which is not classed as a “disguised weapon” in the US and is therefore legal, is designed to be carried in a purse, back pocket or worn in a phone holder on a belt, to be quickly opened and instantly ready to fire with a hammerless action.

I want one! Great CCW choice for those situations when space and concealment are limited. I’ll buy one!

The accuracy on that has to be near zero.

That thing is thicker than the very first iPhone I had. Looking at the bore size it should have been a double barrel .410!

Website says it’s a .380. Still in development.

Won’t matter if the range is also near zero.

This thing has been kicking around for a year now. If a two shot .380 that takes two hands and more than a little fiddling to put into play floats your boat, go for it.

I'll stick with one of Mr. Gaston's finest.

Police already have been using cellphone in hand or on belt as a reason to shoot. Some very high profile police shootings over the past dozen years or so were of people holding cell phones or wallets. To some police, anything in hand is necessarily a gun and is necessarily pointing at the officer.

At ten feet with a laser, accuracy is not terribly important and that sort of distance is the likely scenario.

Okay, maybe for a deep conceal back-up, but otherwise I’ll stick with my daily carry .45 rather than trust my life with that toy.

Just called them. Got clueless answer service that wants name and phone number. Anyway, it did seem that this is still a prototype that should be ready for production end of first quarter 2017. Pre-sale purchases through dealers are already closed, whatever that means. Odd business model, get word out about gun but don’t take orders. (Figure they’ll never ship anything, probably an anti-gun scam.)
