A new commemorative coin from the U.S. Mint and Treasury features a fresh depiction of Lady Liberty. With a crown of stars in her hair and a toga-like dress, she's as patriotic as ever. She's also, for the first time on an officially minted coin, portrayed as a black woman.

The United States Mint unveiled the 24k gold coin in commemoration of their 225th anniversary. Gaze upon her beauty in full:

I don’t think she looks angry. I think she looks thoughtful and firm. Serious.

I have no problem with this. Thoughtful firm black women have an honored place in our American culture.

Despite it's face value of $100 it will sell for the price of gold plus whatever premium they add. I wonder if it will do better than this one.

Lady Liberty was a slave?

I don't see how it sucks up to the BLM crowd, as you say. If they were doing that, she would look like Angela Davis circa 1968, full 'fro, parallel vertical lines between her brows, and showing a lot of teeth.

This one looks solemn, dignified. I'm OK with that.

The same can be said of any idealized female figure, and such figures have been found on dozens of our U.S. coinage designs over the years.

If you don't like idealized female humans, what would you have? Fur-bearing Mammals of North America? World's Best Hunting Dogs?

No, she looks no-nonsense and confident, like the most effective schoolteachers: those that don’t smile til Thanksgiving.

There’s an underlying commonality to them, fitting the Lady Liberty icon. The meaning of that icon does not automatically extend to every Y chromosome owner depicted.

Nobody said I “don’t like idealized female humans”. Stupid to impute it.

Sorry, did not mean to impute.

Nor, I suppose, did you mean to impute that Lady Liberty could hencforth be “...every Y chromosome owner.”

No, if I have anything to say about it. Just the idealized feminine types, like the one under discussion: you know, the ones who “identify as female.”

Unattractive woman.

The Statue of Liberty is not exactly Playboy material either you know.

I don’t see a skin color on the coin. How do we know she is black, unless we use racist stereotypes about the physical traits of blacks. /s

I was going to say the same thing. She kinda looks like Angelina Jolie to me. ;)

The Statue of Liberty’s face wasn’t meant to be seen close up.

The model for the Liberty on the Peace Dollar was the artist’s wife. He was criticized for showing her with her mouth open. Hmm....

The only U.S. coin to depict the American eagle with its wings folded. Go figure...

Oh yes, a hundred dollar gold coin. That’ll see all sort of distribution!! Maybe, like 6 coins?

Who is she? what did she do of note? what laudable ideal does she represent?

She is nobody in particular.
As such, she has done nothing.
I believe the laudable ideal she represents is "Liberty".

It's not much different from the representation of "liberty" shown on many other US coins.

Personally, I think they could have done better with the sculpture. It's not the best representation we've seen on American Coinage, but then, that's all subjective. I'll probably buy one of these.

This bothers me on some level because I know the point was to stick it to whitey and brag about decreasing White populations.

But absent those impure motivations, this is fine/good (so long as they don't stop making White lady Libs). Ok looking sista, she probably voted for Trump, she saw what Obama did to White Libby.
